Hydro drain plug striped

Recommended Posts

wh79d160

Went to change the hydo fluid on the D-160 I bought just before Xmas & noticed the 1/4 allen head was loose in the drain plug on the rear end. I jacked it up & got a light under it & the plug is rounded out inside. It sticks out about an 1/8 of an inch or so, so I tried getting some vise grips on it. I got some pretty good bites on it but can't get it to hold. Short of welding a bolt on it, does anyone have any ideas of how to get the fluid out? I have a suction gun. Can I go down thru the dipstick tube or in thru the side when I take the filter off??? It shows a strainer on the left side, maybe pull that out to get to the inside bottom with the suction gun??? Any body have any ideas?????????????? .5Racer Terry, I think you said you had your apart. Thanks for any input in advance. Tom Z. in Kansas.

I was thinking the same thing, Easy out, the maybe a little heat (Not too much). you could also weld a bolt to it. I personally would NOT drill it out and re tap, just because of metal shavings, and having to make sure the hydraulic fluid is free from debris.

Just my thoughts

This might be a "shot in the dark", but it bailed my butt out on a transmission drive pulley set screw with a stripped hex.

I found a TORX bit that was close to the size of the hex (on the bigger side), drove it in with a hammer, and backed it right out. :handgestures-thumbup:

Terry beat me to it, but I've done the same thing and it worked. Use a little heat too.

Tom,

I hope the Torx bit trick works. Also, don't "drive it" too hard, as you could crack the bottom of the case. Welding a bolt onto the plug sounds like a good idea too.

The hole with the strainer is on the left side, just as you said, but it is under the "motor" half of the Sundstrand hydrostatic transmission. You'd have to remove it, and replace the gasket when you put it back. It might be alot of work.

You can't go in on the filter hole either, as it is actually piped over to the left side of the case (cast into the case, and the parts drawing doesn't show it) where the motor half bolts up, and it's on top of the case. It never actually comes into contact with the "sump".

Whatever you end up doing, be careful not to get any krud in the case. It will quickly destroy the Sundstrand pump.

Good luck, and sorry for not having a better suggestion.

Kevin

Thanks for the input guys. I'll start w/the metric allen, then the torx and last resort, welding the bolt onto it. So much for the suction gun idea. Thanks again, Tom

Hey guys, Just an update. The Torx bit worked. It was a t-45 I lightly pounded into the striped allen hole. I was suprised to say the least. I replaced it with an external hex plug . I took a picture but I'm too stupid to figure out how to post pics. I tried to go thru photo bucket, but can't figure it out. Thanx again for everyones input. Tom Z. in Kansas

looks like tt was right, so far he seems to be pretty much right about wheelhorse :WRS: Glad you got it out, anything that is stripped is a pain the rear.

Tom when you go to Photo Bucket you'll see "upload photo or video", click that. Click on the tab to start uploading. A pic of your computer files will appear. If the pic you want to load is in "My Documnets" browse around till you find it. If its in "Pictures". click on the arrow in the "look in" box. Then find the pic you want and click on it. It will load to Photo Bucket and will appear. If you want to add text or comment do so now if not click on "skip this step". Now look at the pic, below will be several options. To post the pic on here, just click on the line IMG Code. it will copy that. Now go to your post and right click then click on Paste. Now you've just posted a pic. Nothing to it!!! Enjoy.

Thanks for the instructions catman, I'm printing them off now. I'll give it a try later. I'm a catman too. as a matter of fact, I'm putting up my catfish mailbox this weekend. I fish on Perry Lake right down the road from me here in Kansas. I think I saw a post that you fish on a "Perry Lake" some where. Thanx again, Tom.
