T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,610 #26 Posted April 25, 2008 That is one fine looking tractor you got there. It cleaned up real nice. Is that the culprit pepperpot muffler that caused all the trouble?
DMESS 24 #27 Posted April 25, 2008 I've found some pretty cheap, but I've never bagged a free one. That's as good as it gets for a tractor in that nice of condition! Those rear skins might be a little traction limited unless your working the paved corners!
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #28 Posted April 25, 2008 Yep T - MO, that's the giant muffler. The unsupported weight of it - along with no brace, probably caused the exhaust port to strip out over time. The rear "car" tires are a little odd, but like the fronts, they are not very old and in perfect condition. Anyhow ..... I ended up running a tap in the exhaust port and getting a street elbow to thread in far enough to suit me. (about 4 turns.) I also borrowed the brace from my 502 until I can find or fab another one. The muffler is now the correct smaller style and looks much better. Apparently the same person has been working on all of my recent round hoods too .... This is the third one in a row that had a non-functioning governor, which, of course, is now repaired. This one was an "easy fix" that only required the link from the governor arm to the throttle shaft, and a little modification to the existing governor spring. I am extremely pleased with the condition of this tractor, and after my usual "tweaking", it runs & drives great. CasualObserver 3,411 #29 Posted April 25, 2008 Looks like that was well worth the drive. Nice video. And... can't beat that price!

hoosier 1 #35 Posted April 26, 2008 Ha! I thought of one more, if your not tired of this by now. 'Great story' about the tractors life. Some sentiment involved. I love hearing that.
sorekiwi 761 #36 Posted April 26, 2008 The two potential reasons why the pipe pulled out of the block were: 1) The replacement muffler was the large (and heavy) "pepperpot" style. 2) The support brace from the engine block to the pipe was missing. I had the same problem on my 502 when I got it, except it was trying to break the "outside" half of the exhaust port off the block as well. I had a friend (with a big TIG welder)weld up the exhaust port and the now oblong holes for the studs and then machined the surface flat, redrilled the manifold holes and fitted helicoils. It was a PITA, but thought it was worth trying to save an H55. But it wouldnt have happened if someone hadnt lost the U bolt on the exhaust brace.
sorekiwi 761 #37 Posted April 26, 2008 Terry, Is that an origional H55? The recoil on mine is different, I have a big cast aluminum one that I thought was origional.
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #38 Posted April 26, 2008 Terry, Is that an origional H55? The recoil on mine is different, I have a big cast aluminum one that I thought was origional. The Lauson has been replaced by an H60 Tecumseh on this one, Mike. (probably off of a Lawn Ranger) It was also "short-blocked" at some point in its life, because the block is painted black. Your pull starter is the correct original style for the H55 / HT55 Lauson engines.
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #39 Posted April 27, 2008 Just for S & G ,I lined the three up in a row today while they were outside. 46 years later, but with a background that's a lot busier, it might still look a little familiar.
DMESS 24 #40 Posted April 27, 2008 Cool pic! What is the tractor in the background with the drum style snow thrower on it? Seems like it should read 754, but it's hard to see.
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #41 Posted April 28, 2008 Cool pic! What is the tractor in the background with the drum style snow thrower on it? Seems like it should read 754, but it's hard to see. That's my strange-colored (metallic burgandy) 704 with an ST-3072 thrower. I WISH it was a 754.
DMESS 24 #42 Posted April 28, 2008 Ahh, okay, I couldn't see the upright/tank area just right. The 704 is a nice tractor too!

Banjo 0 #47 Posted April 29, 2008 A little more "spit & polish" - and one of my new RedSquare magnets! (Thanks, TD! ) There is something about that tractor that looks perfect just like it is. I would almost hate to ever paint that tractor as I'm not sure you could improve on the whole look of it as is. In other words, the paint shows some age in a really cool kinda way, know what I mean? GREAT FIND! and I'm happy to see it rolled into a great home. -Banjo
