WHwest8597 85 #1 Posted November 2, 2010 I was just wondering what grade of steel is used in the dozer balde wear bar. I don't feel like paying the toro price. Also how do you go about making the square holes in the bar?
Trouty56 567 #2 Posted November 2, 2010 I'm not too picky so I'm going to get a 3" wide piece of steel at TSC, Lowes or etc and drill holes down the center line and use regular bolts. Maybe I can find roundheads that have allen wrench heads. When it wears down flip it over.
Lane Ranger 11,160 #3 Posted November 2, 2010 I think you could use a good grade of steel like the Tractor Supply Stores sell in 48 inch lengths. 4140 is the quality you should be looking for to use. You could drill out the round holes in the same location of the old bar using a drill press or good drill for 3/8 round holes. The square for the carrigage bolt to fit snuggly on the cutting bar is another matter. I want to make one at my dad's blacksmith shop and I think with a good 1/1/2 to 2 top blackmsith trip hammer you should be able to punch out the squares cold -if your punch size set up is right. Update: My dad says we would need to heat each drilled hole as 41% of the surface is still in the corners of the "square" you need to punch out from the round hole. I will update when I get a chance to try to make one of these. May also have to heat it but check with a blacksmith in your area. They need the work!
Forest Road 594 #4 Posted November 2, 2010 If you have a good welding shop in your area that's the way to go. And it'll probably still be cheaper than Toro for twice the steel.
Kelly 1,031 #5 Posted November 3, 2010 I heard I have not checked myself, but toro sells the edges for about $40 I bet a good piece of steel and the time to set up the holes will be worth the cost?? how much are the cutting edges??
jdog_kustoms 82 #6 Posted November 3, 2010 i can get the wear bar for 32.41 plus shipping straight from toro so for 40.00 you can have one to your house to me id pay a couple dollars them mess up a hole or 2 drilling them
