Lift leaver problem

I have a 1988 312-8 that I use for everything. The lift leaver worked for all attachments until this afternoon when supporting the weight if my tiller it let go and dropped the tiller to the floor. I pulled it up and a minute later it dropped again. On the way from my garage to my garden I kept an hand on the leaver to keep the tiller up.

What should I look for to resolve this?

Remove the left side cover and inspect the two pieces I have highlighted in red in this IPL image:

If the latch rod didn't try to straighten out, the notch (in part #41) is probably "rounding out" and will no longer hold the rod when extra weight is applied.

Problem solved:

I adjusted the lift nut to tight in order to pick the mower deck off the ground but that prevented the "ketch" mechanism from being able to hold a heavy weight like a tiller.
