Engine Pulley Removal

Recommended Posts

mattd860

I need to remove the engine (drive) pulley and bearing race from my K301s. However it seems to be frozen on the shaft probably due to rust... and yes - I did remove the two allen screws holding the pulley . Do you usually need to use a jaw puller to remove these things? I'm afraid of ruining the pulley with a jaw puller.

It's soaking in PB blaster now but are there any other tips?

Yes, you need to use a puller, get it good and tight and soak in penetrating fluid.

Give it a day and tighten it more and smack the end of the puller with a hammer.

Shine up the crankshaft as much as possible with sandpaper.

Keep working.

Sometimes they are very hard and the worst case is that you WILL ruin the pully.

The pully is cheaper and easier to find than a good crankshaft.

I don't know what you mean by "bearing race" they just have the crank bearings

that are all one part.

Once you remove the bearing plate , it will all come out of the engine in one part.

and then you have to take the main bearings off of the crank.

If I am not understanding then feel free to say something.

Like he said, but normally they come off with out hitting the puller with a hammer, and I think your talking about the PTO bearing sleeve? it will come off with the pulley, use anti seize before reinstalling.

you can usually rent a multi size puller at any local auto parts store.

Got it off easily with a 4 " 3-jaw puller after soaking it for 24 hours in PB blaster. Didn't even knick the pulley.
