loss of power

Recommended Posts

kirby

I just removed the stock cannister muffler and added a stack onto my 8hp kohler k181s. it seems to have lost power in 1st and 2nd gear. Torque seems fine but it doesnt seem to go as fast. any ideas of whats the cause or what to do to get the speed back besides switching back to the stock cannister muffler.

I had done same thing with my commando 800. I didn't experience this but I know from my motorcycle days that when you make the exhaust less restrictive you had to re jet the carb. i really didn't think any would notice it on the small engines.

I really have no idea on what main jet to go to, it would be all trial and error

You turn the adjustable one on the top of the carburetor out a little bit. :)

@Kirby:

Are you sure you just didn't bump the throttle control "stuff" while you were working on the exhaust? :thumbs:

I really like the look of the stack style muffler! what is necessary to do this conversion? I have an 11hp Briggs and Stratton in my C111

Basic troubleshooting says take the stack muffler off and put the original back on. If the problem goes away, you have found the source.

I would tweek the carb a little. A K181 can run with a stack, just make sure the rain cap opens smoothly and fully.
