NOS Vert!!

Recommended Posts

CasualObserver

Hey Joel... I know you've got money tied up moving and all... but hey... an NOS Vert? Hard to pass that up! I think this is from the same auction last fall that had that NOS Raider in the crate that the guy then bought, assembled and put on ebay. I still wonder whatever happened to the crate! You guys probably remember the tractor I'm talking about... there were LOTS of debates over whether or not it actually was an NOS tractor when it got to ebay because of some surface rust and peeled decals.

Um Jason Buddy, No chance in H@#$ Nan will go for $1700 for a wheel horse. H#$% I won't go for $1700 for a fiberglass ranger. i did however save his pics for future reference :thumbs: It does look nice though. There was a Commando V8 still in the crate at that auction too. :D

:D I wasn't really suggesting you buy it, and I wouldn't pay that much either. (and not just because it's a vertical. )It is a nice looking tractor. You could probably email the guy for some more if you want to save them for references. Good way to see all the original decals and placements of them. I wonder whatever became of that Raider 10 from last fall? Anybody know?

Jason,

I too wondered what became of that Raider 10. I don't think it sold on ebay nor had it came up again, that I know. That one would be a nice one to have had.

I do believe that Rick Vosika now owns it. He's the guy that used to own Karls C160. He wasn't there when I picked up the 160 lot, but his wife showed me a couple of his NOS machines. It was late, I was tired, and didn't look too close at what model it was. I do remember one of them was a 416, and another was an older model, probably the Raider.

Being a vert man, and having a 1970 Lawn Ranger at one time, this is very interesting. But, I think he put a 1 in his price by mistake. At $699.99, he MIGHT get some bids. If anyone bites at his price  , I'll have one for sale as soon as I can get mine cleaned up :WRS: .

That tractor and a few other NOS units came from the Earl Jones estate auction in Hamlet, IN which is close to South Bend. The first sale was a couple years ago and the sale this Ranger was from was last fall. Same guy bought both this Ranger and the Raider. The eBay seller, by the way, is only the listing agent on this. She is great to work with!

Ol' Jones must have been a packrat extraordinaire...It would have defied anyone to shove all the junk back in the buildings and house that the auctioneers drug out of there. Seriously, this guy must have saved all the packing material he got whenever he bought something going back into the 50's!

he ran a repair shop in Hamlet where the locals I talked to said he was anything but quick. Apparently, some of the used equipment they sold - push mowers, chainsaws, outboard motors - might have not actually belong to him but rather were pieces needing repair that were abandoned by owners who got frustrated that it took so long to get back.

There was a lot of NOS stuff though. He had this Ranger, a V8, and the Raider at the most recent sale. The V8 and Raider were still in the crates. At the first sale, they sold another Raider (or Charger - I can never remember which is which without looking) and a second fiberglass Ranger. None of them had ever been gassed or oiled, but they did all show some wear and rust just from sitting around so long.

The units that were crated were of interest to me...and I'd guess to most collectors too. But the cardboard on the crates was cut open by the auction company so people could see what was inside. Then, as people tend to do at auctions, the crowd further messed up the crates because they were curious and had no inhibitions about screwing up what might be valuable to others. Essentially, by the time the sale commenced the crates were shot and had lost all originality. Honestly, the crating system wasn't that impressive anyway.

Ahhh...the unwashed masses.

He also had NOS decks to accompany each. And at least 2 NOS 42" decks from the early 60's that had that overly complicated, trouble prone belt routing used on the 1075 and 875 tractors. You guys that have seen these know what I mean...

........begin rambling here.........

I went to the sale with the express purpose of buying the crated V8. I budgeted plenty of time to get there early enough to look things over and figure out what I was going to bid. Sale started at 10:00. I planned to get there at 9:00. I rolled into Knox at 9:00 on my watch only to realize that Starke County (hamlet) is on Central time while I live my life on Eastern time...so I was an hour earlier than planned (yes, Indiana - as small as it is - has more than one time zone!). Plenty of time to stop for gas and a snack. Of course, when I got back into the truck and turned the key...nothing. Starter went out!

So, at 8:00 am on a Sunday I am stuck in a gas station with a dead truck. A tow to auto zone later I find myself buying tools and laying on the ground in the parking lot with the tow truck driver replacing a starter on a 10 year old truck that had spent lots of time living in Lake Effect country...lots of snow=lots of salt=lots of rust.

........end rambling here......

At any rate, I made it to the sale just in time (about 11) to get a bid number and watch the V8 sell. Stuck in the back behind the crowd and not completely sure what I was bidding on, I missed out. So it goes!

So, you guys are all saying to yourselves...."Shut up already you pompous, self glorifying, rambling idiot! What did the tractors sell for?"

From the 1st sale:

NOS Raider/Charger 10 (no crate): $1200 or $1600 (don't recall which)

NOS Ranger (no crate) $700

From the 2nd sale:

NOS Raider 10 (in crate): $1100

NOS Commando V8 (in crate): $600

NOS Ranger (no crate): *See note below

Seems like the NOS decks went for about $500 apiece.

I might be off a little on these prices, but they are pretty close...on average I am probably real close...little high on one, little low on another...definately within a std deviation though.

*I will post the price of the one currently offered on Ebay later since I think it is a little questionable ethics-wise to do so now while the auction is running.

I had no interest in the Rangers since they were only slightly nicer than the one I already have. I didn't have a deep enough love for Chargers/Raiders to pay the price of entry on those. This was one of those cases that I think the prices would have gone much higher if I had been willing to chase the tractors. Case in point was the NOS LawnBoy "Loafer" power unit and the NOS tiller (don't recall brand) that each brought about $700.

I wonder why some stuff commanded such prices, but again I do realize that no matter how well you restore something, you never can "make" it original. That said, I guess that's why I really like "original", unmolested tractors. NOS is even better because you could see the paint runs and misapplied decals from the factory!

So, no big purchases for me, but I did buy quite a bit of literature though. And an NOS RJ style snowblade. And a glut of Evinrude stuff. I know others walked away from there with a Walk-Away Sickle bar mower, RJ-35 planter, and a Pond self powered walk behind reel mower (who's ever seen one of THOSE?!?!).

To my frustration, these auctions were actually pretty widely publicized on the Yahoo site. I was hoping to pick up everything on the cheap!

Another late night....better run!

Steve

Steve,

Sounds like an interesting auction and a great place to kill a little time. Those prices, though, were too high for me. :WRS: so all I would have been doing was window shopping. But still, a good time.

Eldon,

You're correct, Rick still has that tractor. I talked to him a couple of weeks ago and he plans to bring it to the show this year.

Thanks for the rundown there Steve! Sorry to hear about your truck and that you didn't get the one piece you were after... been there before myself. I wanted to go to that auction, and was even back in IL that weekend, but didn't make it over there. I was interested in the NOS Raider, but knew I wouldn't have deep enough pockets.

You're right about it being widely publicized. And that's partly because the auction company did a great job getting the right crowd, and the collector hotlines were going out on all yahoo groups and forums. Folks were so amazed by what all was going to be available, they just had to share the info with their friends. News of a sale like that spreads like a pandemic. I'm finding now that you can't go to widely publicized auctions expecting to find something cheap. You have to hit the small town consignment auction houses and estate sales.

Deereman: You may also see the term NORS. It is used a lot in the old car ads. It is for New Old Replacement Stock. It is supposed to indicate that the part was updated and intended to replace an original, such as those used in recall repairs, and so it may vary from true original equipment, but is considered "correct" for points judging. but NOS and NORS have just about become synonymous.
