Horse'n Around 22 #1 Posted October 27, 2010 Howdy, I need to remove the cannister type muffler on a HH120 and its stuck. The locking rings or jamb nuts came loose very easily. I have been applying PB Blaster to the muffler / block junction hoping it would work in a help but so far I have had no luck. I have tried the search function but I didnt turn up anything, I did get a bunch of "menu disabled" responses. I dont know if I was doing something wrong? Te engine is on the tractor so holding it still isnt a problem,I just do not want to put too much leverage on the muffler pipe with a pipe wrench for fear of possibly breaking the block or something equally disasterous. I suppose I could cut the muffler off close to the block and then use a Dremel on the inside of the pipe (if it will fit inside the pipe) with the exhaust valve closed to carefully cut the inside of the pipe down to where the threads start to show and then bend the cut pipe out of the way. Is there a better way than this? I am open to suggestions. Again I did try the search function before posting this but had no good luck with my searches. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can extricate this muffler also... I dont care if the muffler gets destroyed, with all the trouble its giving me it would feel good to hurt Truthfully, it is in sad shape as it is anyway. Thanks, John
Indy w h 5 #2 Posted October 27, 2010 Az Ive had luck with cutting the pipe off and using a hacksaw blade to cut through what's left inside the threads. Then use a chisel to bend the pipe away from the threads and remove with some visegrips. It's easier than using a torch I think hope it helps Indy
jasoncracer 0 #3 Posted October 27, 2010 tgats one ggod thought in this case ive been here i sprayed it the let it soak for days or used a pipe wrench with some elbow grease and hoped for the best and it worked good luck

wallfish 18,043 #5 Posted October 27, 2010 I had to cut them also but couple of them cracked loose after running the motor to use the exhaust heat. The heat also seems to suck in the penetrating oil a little. It'll smoke a bit and smell like crap but it might help.
Crazywheelhorseman 69 #6 Posted October 27, 2010 I have had to cut them out like indy. every now and then with some brute strength you can get them out as long as the wrench doesn't slip and the pipe doesn't crush.
jimbotelho 1 #7 Posted October 27, 2010 Being a former steamfitter here is the correct way that Iwas taught how to remove a pipe that will not backout of a fitting or in this case a motor First cut the pipe off about a inch or so from the block next being very careful that you do not cut into the threads use a saw blade to cut the pipe inside thye block use can make it easier by using a hack saw holder and go easy then get your self what is called a bull nose chisel and carefully start to peal away the cut thru nipple once you cave it in it will almost fall out on its own t ry this and you should be successful let me know if you have questions good luck and go slow it works!
Horse'n Around 22 #8 Posted October 28, 2010 Thank you all for your help! I have ran the engine several times after repeatedly using the PB Blaster in hopes that it might break loose after getting hot, it has worked for me in the past but this time it doesnt feel like its going to work and in the back of my head theres a little voice that says if I push my luck I might permanently damage the block. I might be worrying too much about it, but there have been times when I didnt listen to that little voice and it came back to bite me in my butt and HARD! I am going to take your advise and cut it off and use the hacksaw blade to carefully cut thru the pipe on the inside untill the treads are just starting to show and use the chisel to collapse it in on itself. Thank you all again for your suggestions, you guys are the greatest! John

Horse'n Around 22 #11 Posted October 29, 2010 Always listen to the little voices in your head John Can't go wrong with Indy and Jim's advice. Hey I went out and worked on removing the muffler and I did as you said, once I cut thru the pipe in thirds and exposed the tip of the threads. I used the chisel on one section then it came loose and I unscrewed it with pliers as slick as you please, the threads are perect, not a mark on them.I really appreciate your help, you saved me a ot of work. I'm going to install the origional exhaust system on it tomorrow, but first Im going to use my trusty antisieze on the threads and the slip connection. I use that stuff a lot, it sure pays off in the end. !!! PS.. The voices in my head are my friends... among other things....they keep telling me to do things like ..."John, buy more Wheel Horses" I like the voices in my head John
