Governor question #2

Recommended Posts

Greg Parnell

I have a K181 that I just started working with. It seems to me the "governor" will not let it idle down so the slow speed idle small plate is resting against the adjustment screw. The lowest speed the engine will run sounds like about quarter throttle. I can increase the engine speed fine with the throttle cable.

Do I need to adjust the governor system somehow to allow the engine to slow down to idle? The engine runs great , it just will not idle down. I've read through the governor chapter of the K181 manual and didn't see anthing about adjusting the system to run at idle speeds.

What needs to be done to get this below quarter throttle?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Greg,

This sounds like a throttle cable adjustment issue. With the throttle all the way to slow, is it still exerting any "pull" on the system?

You may not be able to tell easily. If that is the case you should be able to release the cable conduit/sheath by loosening a screw that holds it clamped. With the conduit loose it should idle. If so tighten the clamp with it in that position.

If it still will not go down to idle with the conduit loose you will need to check a few other things, for example see if anything is binding.

Keep us posted.

Rolf,

It still runs at about quarter speed with the throttle cable disconnected. Everything seems to operate very smooth. I don't see any binding.

When it is running and I push the linkage toward idle, the engine tries to correct and slows down and almost cuts off, when I let it go it returns to the same fast speed. This all happens in about 1 second, just a quick push on the linkage to idle position and it almost cuts off.

Other than this, the engine runs super good.

I'll look over the manual again, maybe I missed something.

I think you should adjust the governor according to the manual and go from there.

Greg, I have a K181 here that did the same thing. The "tab" on the governor shaft came off inside the motor. May be something else to look into!! I figured mine out when the governor shaft pulled all the way out.........

I have since bought a replacement shaft and tack welded the tab. Didn't want to rely on the rivet!!!

Hope that helps........

Thanks for the advice, I'll try to find time to work on it this weekend and see what can be done.

 The govorner problem is solved!!! after a short learning curve all it took was some adjustments to get it set up right. Idle is good now.

Thanks for the help!
