zieg72 209 #1 Posted October 12, 2010 Recently picked up a 417-8, thanks JT. It has a Kohler 17QTS series 2 engine. I don't have a manual so am I to put a non-detergent straight weight or what? Also at idle the valves seem a little noisy, are they adjustable??? Sorry for the questions, just haven't had to mess with anything as my 520H ran perfect and still does. Runs excellent otherwise and the steering is nice and tight. It still may get a face lift after it earns its keep this winter. Thanks in advance...
mr.pipes 4 #2 Posted October 15, 2010 The series II uses 30w at 32f + up. 10w-30 or 10w-40 at 0-30f. 5w-20 or 5w-30 at 32f and below. Use a high quality detergent oil of API class SF or SG. This info is from the manual and others may have different preferences. You can download the manual on Kohlers web site, 75 pgs.

Haven't had one before and didn't know. I'll have to download the manual and see what it says about the valves.
Wheel Horse Fan 3 #4 Posted October 15, 2010 Also consider adding a bit more oil. The only way to adjust the valves is to grind them. It's very possible the noise is from the cam gear. Mine makes what I thought to be a valve tapping noise, but it' actually a sloppy cam gear. Kinda of a weird issue.
mr.pipes 4 #5 Posted October 15, 2010 Carl, I saw that you don't have the exact year down for your 417-8. I have an 85 & 86. 85 does not have a louvered hood. 86 seems to be a bit fancier with chrome air cleaner, chrome muffler and also has electric lift. Maybe this will help you out if you do not have a ID tag or were not sure.

I appreciate it, my sticker is not all there but I have the louvered hood, electric lift and chrome air cleaner so I am claiming it to be a 1986. Thanks for the info.
