Tiller Hook Up Help Needed

Recommended Posts

RPR

I'll try to be brief, but...

I purchased a 416-H recently, then bought a tiller, and had no trouble hooking it up. Then I decided to buy a 312-8, wanting to use it for tilling, and keeping the 416 with powerflow strictly for mowing.

My confusion is that there was a tube for the cable on the 416...there is no cable tube on the 312. It looks like the cable could run through a small cut out in front of the shifter (under the seat pan), but then it looks like the shifter boot would be rubbed by the cable.

Then to add to it all, a fellow at the dealership where I stopped said the 312 did not need the bracket under the seat pan, one of which I had put on the 416. (The bracket that the lift cable and tiller chain both attach to for the power lift.)

Added note in case it makes any difference, my 312 has electric lift.

This may be easy, but being totally new to Wheel Horse tractors, I am a bit confused. I tried to find an online manual but did not find one I could look at.

Thanks for any help.

RPR-

There have been some people who don't use the cable tube for the tiller lift. You could do a R.S. search under 'tiller' and find those posts for further info. But if you wanted to use one, there are two differently shaped tubes from W.H. that depend on which transmission you have, hydro and 8-speed. You would need the 8-speed tube for the 312-8. You would use the same rock shaft from under the seat pan of your 416H on your 312-8. Since you have electric lift, I think you could use the same lift cable too. You may need to get a different clevis bracket that hooks the cable to your lift since it's an 8-speed as well. To get a better idea of this, just use your tiller's model number (NOT the tractor's) at Toro's web site to download the manual. The illustration should be able to provide you the part numbers you need. I'd be willing to bet that someone here at RS would be able to set you up with what you need. :)

RPR - Im pretty sure I've got a spare tube that sits on the tranny of a 312-8 for the lift cable to run through. PM me with your address and if I've one it I'll send it to you for the cost of postage. I'll check my shop in the morning.

Duff :)
