mattd860 162 #26 Posted October 7, 2010 Where can I get front tires like this: The tires on my Suburban right now are 480/400/8 but I can't find any tires like the ones in the pictures in 480/400/8. IS 480/400/8 an oddball size? Is the size even stock to the 1960 Suburban 550? What other sizes should I maybe consider?
mattd860 162 #27 Posted October 9, 2010 Can someone help me find some parts for the Tecumseh H55? I need the following parts: 30057 - Spring tension 29562 - Governor tension spring 30058 - link - throttle 29533 - ling - governor to throttle. I really need these parts to get my engine going. If someone can possibly match these parts up with newer part (numbers) from newer Tecumseh engines with active part numbers that would be great! I can probably go the hardware store and get the springs and links but I'm not sure how that would all work out once installed.
wallfish 18,154 #28 Posted October 9, 2010 Not sure if this helps or not. I posted the measurements for the links on a thread for Charlie. Let me know if you need them or can't find the thread. EDIT -- Nevermind, I went back and looked at your pics and your setup would be different I believe
mattd860 162 #29 Posted October 9, 2010 Thanks John. The link you are referring to is here - http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/index.php?...c=20167&hl=link It does help a little bit but the carb is completely different so I can't really follow it. I will make a similar post as charlie did and hope for the best. Thanks
mattd860 162 #30 Posted October 11, 2010 I did some work this weekend and got it running good. I fabricated the Governor linkage using 16 gauger metal wire . It took me a while to figure out the various linkage points but I eventually got it. It's not all that different from other 4 cycle gas engine I had laying around. I changed the gear oil in the rear and it was as thick as molasses. It was almost as thick as watery peanut butter. I drained it, refilled with 80-90 gear oil, spun the wheels by hand for about 5 minutes, and drained and refilled again. Now the tractor will easily roll around the garage. There is still a few things I need to figure out and fix.. 1. Oil leaking out of the governor when the engine is on. Anyone know where I can get a new governor or seal??? 2. The oil drain plug is frozen solid. I need to get a 3/8 in 8-point socket and try again - maybe with a little heat. For now it's soaking in PB Blaster. 3. The belt from the engine to the rear end does not disengage when the clutch disengages - it basically just keeps spinning making it impossible to shift gears. I checked the dimension and the belt is the correct size (29") according to other posts I've seen. I'm going to order a 30" and see if that helps. Here's a pic of the oil leak... mattd860 162 #31 Posted October 17, 2010 Went to the Jacktown show in PA this weekend and had a blast. Met some other Wheel Horse collectors and leaned TONS of things about my tractor and others. One collector GAVE me a bunch of Suburban stuff like an exhaust shield with new clips, pedals, Kohler K91 carburetor, RJ/suburban deck blades, steering column, key switch, and other various items. He also gave me a new frame, front end, and rear end/transmission. The frame, front & rear ends he is delivering to my house next week. I also picked up some nice front tires. What does this go to? Suburban 550 28 #33 Posted October 17, 2010 Where can I get front tires like this: The tires on my Suburban right now are 480/400/8 but I can't find any tires like the ones in the pictures in 480/400/8. IS 480/400/8 an oddball size? Is the size even stock to the 1960 Suburban 550? What other sizes should I maybe consider? Matt, the tri-rib front tires on my Suburban in the picture are a chinese brand that the local Wheel Horse picked up for me, where he got them, I'll have to ask him. I think the size of them are 4.80-8 without going out and lookin'. Can't find the originals anymore although about 2 years ago I saw a brand new set of the originals on e-bay. Here is a picture of the original tires on the tractor when I brought it home. All dry rotted but still held air. BTW, nice haul of extra parts you picked up.
mattd860 162 #34 Posted October 19, 2010 I also picked up this at the show. Is it a genuine wheel horse part?
hcminis 1,700 #35 Posted October 19, 2010 Believe it is original with the exception of the added hitch part. Here is what mine looks like.
mattd860 162 #36 Posted October 19, 2010 But without that added hitch part - what purpose will it serve?
hcminis 1,700 #37 Posted October 19, 2010 This bracket is what lifts your mower deck. The added hitch would allow you to hook a trailer to the tractor. Looking at my picture if you needed to pull a trailer with the deck on there is nothing to hook it to. There is a flat piece of steel that is inserted when the deck is off for me to pull a trailer. This is just my observation as I could be wrong. Plus, your bracket doesn't seem to be as long as the one I have on my 550.
CasualObserver 3,411 #38 Posted October 19, 2010 DJ is right, that bracket is part of the deck lift. That style of deck used the slot hitch, L-bracket and that long rod to push the deck and swing it up closer to the frame. It didn't really lift, it just swung forward and up to a higher carrying position. The design of this is what necessitated the addition of the AH-60 Auxiliary Hitch... it's a Y-shape tow hitch that bolts to the top two holes in the rear of the side plates on the 1960 transmissions. Looks like this. That other part is the deck engagement pedal, it goes on the right foot peg. (like this...)
