Forest Road 594 #1 Posted September 21, 2010 Hi guys I have a 1991 312-8 model#31-12K804. It ran fine last week. And now it wont run without the aid of the choke. I think its time for a carb rebuild. I really hate to take it apart without replacement gaskets. According to toro and Part tree the parts are no longer available. Does anyone have a source for a kit? Thanks
B-8074 20 #2 Posted September 21, 2010 I just did a carb on a K301, got the carb kit at the local cub cadet dealer. Just give who ever you call the model and spec #'s off the motor. But if you haven't all, take the fuel bowl off and see if anything is in it.
MaineDad 87 #3 Posted September 21, 2010 Napa has the correct Kohler carb rebuild kits. Just did one this weekend on a K301...
Forest Road 594 #4 Posted September 22, 2010 Ahhh relief! I'll be looking into NAPA shortly. Thanks guys!
Forest Road 594 #5 Posted September 24, 2010 Thanks again guys. I just found the Kohler numbers online. Napa online wasn't any help but I did manage to find a Stens kit on Ebay. Wish me luck. The tractor is 200 miles north at a vacation house. I really hope its right!!!!
multihobbyguy 35 #6 Posted September 24, 2010 The trick with NAPA is to go in and ask to see their Outdoor Power Products or Outdoor Power Equipment catalog(can't remember the exact name). Every part you need for a kohler engine is in there.
Forest Road 594 #7 Posted September 24, 2010 Thanks I wish I had one nearby. NAPA seems to be the one stop shop for this stuff. I've got my fingers crossed that this is the right kit. If not the tractor comes home AGAIN to get repaired. My wife wants to learn how to drive it. For the sole purpose of running me down.
B-8074 20 #8 Posted September 24, 2010 Is there a Cub Cadet dearler near you? That's where I get 99% of my Kohler engine parts. I know, but they are less than a mile from my house. Just a thought.
Kelly 1,033 #9 Posted September 24, 2010 From personal experience I only use Kohler brand cab kits, I've had issues with the other brands, and most times a Kohler kit is only a few bucks more.
Forest Road 594 #10 Posted September 24, 2010 Thanks guys. No Cub dealer nearby. My favorite small engine shop is a Toro dealer and of NO help in finding a carb kit. I was actually disappointed as I'm quite fond of them. I've had good luck in the past w/ STENS carb kits. But would always prefer a factory original as well. The last time I used STENS it was $75 for them vs. $250 for Yamaha OEM.
Forest Road 594 #11 Posted October 19, 2010 I finally got around to installing my Oregon Ebay Kohler carb kit. It worked out well. She purrs quite nicely once again. I just hope I get a few years out of it.
MaineDad 87 #12 Posted October 19, 2010 Nice job! Was it really dirty?
Forest Road 594 #13 Posted October 20, 2010 It wasn't to bad. The rubber on the needle was shot. after 20yrs of svc I'm impressed that it came apart so easily. Lets see how long it last w/ todays increasing ethanol levels.
