Docwheelhorse 2,689 #1 Posted September 17, 2010 Hello All, well over the last 24 hours I have gotten a crash course in Kohler Magnum Magento Ignitions.... thanks to other posts and other members I got the coil installed correctly and it throws a hell of a spark---I got hit a few times by accident and was laying on the driveway looking a little like this---> Anyways---when I turn the key off it won't shut off the engine. I then took the kill wire and went straight to ground and I can see blue sparks going from the terminal on the end of the wire but the engine just won't quit . I took the shroud off and started the engine in the dark and there are many little blue sparks jumping all over the laminated pieces of sheet metal in the shape of a horseshoe. I even took a test lead and clipped it from the kill post straight to ground and it won't stop I also know that the spark is going down the kill wire---thats how I lit myself up. So whats wrong??? Is the admittedly beat up and rusty coil that I stole off a left for dead blown up Magnum 10 junk? Did I miss something in the install??? Save Old Iron 1,568 #2 Posted September 18, 2010 Tony, just got back from jamming with my cousin "Bleeding Gums" Iron in Saratoga. It was an electrifying experience too. I think I ended up on the ground with that look on my face too. But for different reasons. Anyway ...that coil is toasted. The high voltage from the coil secondary is finding a pathway to ground other than across the spark plug gap. That pathway appears to be an internal insulation breakdown in the coil body. This allows the high voltage energy to sneak out of the coil body to the grounded laminations of the coil assembly. Conceptually this is no different than a cracked spark tower on a standard ignition coil allowing the high voltage energy to sneak out the coil tower HV connection. Once the energy escapes out of the HV plug wire connection, it will seek the nearest ground and create a spark across to the ground connection. Wave Bye Bye to the coil !! The repair facility at SOI University is having a toofer sale this week - two magnetos repaired for the price of one. Docwheelhorse 2,689 #5 Posted September 18, 2010 Hi All, I FIXED IT!!!! (Well kinda patched it...) This morning I saw a small tab oposite the side where the kill wire hooks up and I saw that it WAS spot welded to the pack of steel "thingys" in the shape of a horseshoe. Well.... it looked mighty convenient that a square notch was there in the plastic "air director" thingy so I tapped a flat washer into it and made the tab connect again.... a dab of RTV was put to hold the washer in place and VOILA.... the engine turns off with the key!!!!! I'm still sending my other coil to S.O.I for repair and will dig thru my stuff to find the part he needs for his Raider. This forum has helped me very much in the last two days!!
