I'm curious about ignition styles on several tractors.

My son's recently acquired Electro 12 has this small coil which I'm pretty sure means it has electronic ignition:

That one dates to the late 60s - '68 IIRC. It's the same as I find on my '71 Raider 12. Yet the much newer '85 312-8 has a conventional looking coil. Does that mean it has points? Or just a different style of electronic ignition.

I'm curious about what kinds of ignition were used on the K301 engines through the years.

Hi--your correct, the Electro has electronic ignition and it was a fancy "option" along with the electric clutch---hence the name of the tractor. The 312 does have points and a conventional 12 volt coil. The bad news.... if the electronic ignition quits on the Electro you will go broke fixing it.... The good news---you can convert the electronic igniton engine to points and a coil very easily when it becomes neccesary.
