HankB 16 #1 Posted September 16, 2010 I'm curious about ignition styles on several tractors. My son's recently acquired Electro 12 has this small coil which I'm pretty sure means it has electronic ignition: That one dates to the late 60s - '68 IIRC. It's the same as I find on my '71 Raider 12. Yet the much newer '85 312-8 has a conventional looking coil. Does that mean it has points? Or just a different style of electronic ignition. I'm curious about what kinds of ignition were used on the K301 engines through the years.
Docwheelhorse 2,740 #2 Posted September 16, 2010 Hi--your correct, the Electro has electronic ignition and it was a fancy "option" along with the electric clutch---hence the name of the tractor. The 312 does have points and a conventional 12 volt coil. The bad news.... if the electronic ignition quits on the Electro you will go broke fixing it.... The good news---you can convert the electronic igniton engine to points and a coil very easily when it becomes neccesary. Tony
