Basic Steering Overhaul Instructions

Recommended Posts

mattd860

The steering on my 1987 418-8 was very loose. There was about 5+ inches of steering backlash meaning I could turn the steering wheel about 5+ inches to the left or right before the front wheels would move. If I was plowing or turning the wheel with any load on the front end, the steering gear would actually skip a few teeth.

After searching the forum and looking at my tractor, I determined that the fly gear (#15 on the diagram below) on the lower steering shaft was too far away from the gear on the upper steering shaft (#26). I also determined that the hole on the steering support (#19) where the lower steering shaft sticks into was badly worn and oblong due to a cracked and worn brass bushing (#23).

So I determined to just replace the bad parts as well as a couple "while I'm in there" parts. Here's what I replaced:

Diagram Reference | Part Description | Part # | Quantity:

#12 | Flanged Bushing | 6472 | Qty: 1

#16 | Washer | 5210 | Qty: 2

#17 | Washer | 1278 | Qty: 2

#18 | Cotter Pin | 932035 | Qty: 1

#19 | Steering Support | 109733 | Qty: 1

#22 | Grease Fitting | 1481 | Qty: 1

#23 | Brass Bushing | 6397 | Qty: 1

Total Cost ~

Save Old Iron

Way to go Matt.

How about a $$ tally on the cost of this repair / adjustment ? Just like when I watch the home repair shows, I find myself asking "Ok, now how much ?"

Maybe a few pics of the final repair when your camera is back online.

Thanks for the taking the time to take the pics.

:)

And just think, If someone would have greased it from the begining, you would not have to replace all of that.

Added total cost for parts which ended up being around $80.

Nicely done :)

One other area to check during the initial diagnosis process. The tied rod ends sometimes come partially unbolted in the front, adding play. Easy to fix, - just tighten them up.

Any remaining play is elsewhere.
