Your B-80, if it has the stock transmission, has the 8 pinion differential.

I guess any 8 speed could be considered a 6 speed if you don't count reverse. :)

Wheel Horse called their 5060 a 6 speed even though it had 3 forward and reverse plus Hi/Lo.

8 pinion differentials were found in 5091, 103907, 103916 & 103918 transmissions.

That's just the patent number. The model number should be 103907 for a 1977 B-80. That is an 8-pinion tranny.

All Wheel Horse trannys are strong, but the 8-pinion seems to be the one coveted by pullers.

The Wheel Horse marketing team.

In order to make people think they were getting as much or more than what the competitors were offering, the marketing team counted hi & lo reverse as "speeds" beginning about 1973.

I've "been inside" quite a few Uni-Drives and have seen everything from a broken input shaft to stripped or chipped gears, blown spider, ring, and axle gears, broken axles, etc. They are strong, but not indestructible - and yes, the 8 pinion differential is the strongest production differential offered by Wheel Horse.
