20 HP Rebuild???

Recommended Posts

Shuboxlover

I am thinking of maybe rebuilding the Onan in my 520 this winter....not that it really needs it, but the governor is half broken, so it surges sometimes. It has just shy of 1400 hours on it, it puffs very little smoke now and again, and there are no weird noises.

What do you guys think would be good to do to this thing? The only reason I mention a rebuild, is if I go in there and fix the governor, I might as well do some other things to a motor that has 1400 hours on it.

What would a rebuild/refresh cost you think? I can't and don't want to spend a lot of money on it, but I would be willing to invest a little bit to prolong the life of it.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

depending on the condition it's in when you get in there, i would just do a ring and

a proper valve job. maybe bearings, depending on how they look/feel.

thems onans can get very pricy to put parts into if you don't watch out.

damn good engines though :)

I just bought a few gaskets for my onan and it was near $80, 2 intake, 2 exhaust, 1 gromet for the dipstick tube, and a carb base gasket :) , yes I was going to just buy a gasket set, and use what I needed, but it was $212, I've seen kits complete go for around $1000

So if I just do the rings and a valve job.....what do you think we are talking?

...oh, and don't forget about the new governor I'm going to need.

Just a guess but I would say you are going to go in that far your going to want to do a complete rebuild. Guessing to do that amount would probably still be 400-600 but like I say thats just a guess. These pieces and parts aren't cheap and you would be shootin yourself in the foot by not going completely thru the motor. Especially if this is going to be a Keeper. See Ya, Bye
