Hi, I am new here and I have some questions.

I currently do not own any WH tractors yet. I have 2 older Simplicity tractors that are nice. I find that I really like old tractors! I would like to add another tractor to my collection and at first I was looking at old Cub Cadets. Like the model 1250 or 1450. I test drove a 1000 and it was sweet. The only thing about them tractors is that the decks seem to rust out on them quickly. The tractor seemed unbelievably tough!

Then I discovered the Wheel Horse. I dont know much about these tractors other than they look really cool. You can definetly see the difference in the way these three tractor manufactures think. I think I would like to get one of these, something like the C-100. I definetly have to see the difference with a rear discharge deck! The problem is that all the tractors I see seem to be very expensive. More so than the Cub Cadets and even more so than the Simplicitys.

Why are the WH so expensive? Are they worth the difference in price for the quality of the machine or quality of cut?

I would like to take a closer look at some Wheel Horse tractors. If anyone here lives aroung Milwaukee WI let me know if you are willing to show me your tractors. It would be greatly appriciated!

Thanks

Jackpot-

Welcome! Wheel Horse's were prolific. You are right to want one or more.

They need not be expensive. Suggest you search for any of the "C" series.

Would be good if you are handy, have access to transport, and cover the

advertising waterfront. Wheel Horses are beautifully designed and a pleasure

to work on. Good luck.

There are tractor shows all over the country this time of year. Got to be one near Milwaukee. Find one and go, bound to be some garden tractors there and most likely some Wheel Horses. If you for some reason get down the lake toward Elgin, let me know and I will show you mine. :) :USA:

Hey Nick! Welome to our site! :)

Wheelhorses were over engineered and simple! Over engineered meaning they are very heavy to the point where, with care, they truely will last an owner's life time! They are simple in design with few bells and whistles to stop functioning or break. In all the lines WH made and that Toro continued to make for years afterwards, the implements would fit on a multitude of tractors. I have decks, blowers and plows that will fit tractors, (mostly the C series), from the mid 1970's well into the 1990's. Most manufacturers even then didn't do that opting instead to create implements designed only for a few model year tractors and then charging the consumer more money for a propritary piece.

I have four tractors that I use to mow, plow, blow and cart residential tasks with year round. I think if you do get your hands on a cared-for C-Series Wheel Horse and compare it to other makes of that era, you'll see what we mean. The big guys of the time, JD, Cub, WH and even Simplicity all made great quality products. I just think the ease of switching implements on the Wheelhorse and all the things mentioned above puts them a step ahead. One thing is certain.........you'll never see the quality or engineering of all those brands produced again anywhere for a price that's even remotely affordable.

If you take your time and don't "impulse buy", you can get your hands on a well cared for 20+ year Wheel Horse for reasonable money. Two of my tractors were free or sold to me because the owner thought they were generally like a Sears throw-away model.

Good Luck in your search and stop back with any questions!

Nick, :) The 1st and third ad you posted are not bad deals. The first one, being a one owner with all the attachments is a pretty good deal and with a little negotiating maybe even better and the other seems to be a well cared for unit and again with negotiation (I'd start a couple hundred less) may be even better. Don't forget, these tractors, with care, will be still around long after the $2000 throwaways from the big box stores are dead and buried. Good luck with your search.

Rustynut,

I agree that last one is very nice. I emailed him and asked him what the lowest he would take for it. He has not replied yet. What would you spend on that one if you were to get it?

I still say...find some shows. There is always tractors for sale and you may do better toward the end of a show. Take cash and a trailer and have some fun. :)

Jackpot, posting the ads here with locations could get it bought out from under you. Just the price they want an a pic or two would be better.....

Just a friendly piece of advice that I'm sure some here won't like me saying :)

i think you can find a $300 tractor, but not many any with attachments. i have a 518 i would sell for $350 with out any attachments. i keep looking for a deck for it but can't seam to find any under $200 in good shape that i am willing to drive for.

so if you find something for $300 buy it and consider you paid for the deck and got the tractor cheep.

there are people out there that think just because it says "wheel horse" on it it was made out of gold and they should be able to sell it for 10 times what it is worth.

I got into Wheel Horse tractors about 2 years ago. I have a C-120 that I have had for over 15 years. At first I did some impulse buying and then began reading Red Square and learned a lot regarding impulse buying and the prices. Since then I have been very lucky and have bought them right. One thing I consider is the original price to purchase and the repair cost. You will be anazed how fast you can over spend. There are a bunch of great guys on this site and parts available for fair prices. Like has been said, take your time and you will find the right tractor. I believe for the money, especially in Florida, tractor # 3 would be in my barn tonite.

By the way, welcome to this site.

Nick: Welcome to Red Squarre and good luck getting a nice Wheel Horse for yourself. They are a great tractor and one you can maintain and operate fairly well.

Those cub Cadet mowers are a real problem.

A nice C-100 like you have in the third ad is worth every penny! Years later you would be kicking yourself!

Lots of capabilities with a C-100.
