I've been asking lots of questions, but finally have a tractor. Picked it up on ebay, not cheap ) But, it was what I was looking for and should be in decent shape. It wasn't the crazy $$$ that the 702 went for a couple weeks ago I was watching. Not sure how much resto I'll do as it is going to be used . . but I'll have to see once I pick it up. I'm going to get some AG tires and look for some attachments I can use for grading etc.

Pete,

Great news on your horse. When do you pik her up? Have you named her yet?

The 854 is a nice machine. The narrow snow-tire type tires get rather good traction. With chains they are amazing.

Make sure, whatever you do, you don't push her with the steering wheel. Thos 2 spoke wheels are not sturdy and it would be a shame to break it.

Does it have the rear slot hitch, drawbar or both? If you want to play with various attachments I highly recommend getting the sleeve hitch and also the clevis hitch adaptor. That way you have a range of options.

If you need a manual copy send me your address.

Rolf :P :D

I have always considerd the 854 to be the best looking model Wheel Horse ever made! It looks like a very nice example of a 854 you won. Good Luck

The 854 is one model that I have not been able to hunt down yet but I do have some leads and hope to have one by show time. Now if you think the 854 was exspencive ..... try buying a model 754!!!!

Thanks guys, I'm excited. I know I'll be tirn between restoring parts of it and actually using the hell out of it. Its going to SC to be my tractor there. So any real resto will have to happen before I take it down there. As for a previous question, it does have the slip hitch . . .people notice it was mounted upside down

Any suggestions are welcome . . its going to be my little workhorse . . I bought a trailer also to transport it down there and between my two properties.

Hummmmm the 854 thats a good lokking tractor I got mine eight years ago I think at the wheel horse show in PA it was in a box nobody knew what it was and after blasting priming and painting its still here it was so lonely I got another one ready to go two years ago at the show so it has a mate Now bill said some about the 754 whitch is the same tractor but with a seven hp kohler now I have four of them little tractors they seem to fall out of the trees around here.

the hich shouls be connected to a cable that you raise or lower with the same handle that raises the deck on the left of the tractor post some pictures when you finnish with it

I picked it up this morning. Seems to run good. I was impressed at how fast it starts, tiny, tiny puff of smoke initially, then nothing. I'm going to have to paint some of it ) It was advertised as an amateur paint job and it is that at best. Ill paint some of the big pieces and see how that goes. I know, I know, it will be hard to stop painting ) Remember, though, this horse is going to be used and used hard . I need a belt to attach the deck to the PTO, what size do I need?

OK so I flipped the hitch over, that was a major minor pain. Anyway, now I need a belt for the PTO to deck . .what size? Also, the pulley on my PTO pedal, the bearing doesn't feel good. Are these available or serviceable or does the pulley need to be replaced? It appears the pulley would have to be split to get the bearing out, so it seems you can only replace the entire pulley, am I right? The pulleys on the crankshat, there are three grooves. The inner runs the drive, the second out lines up to do the deck I assume and the third or outer most groove is for . . . what ???

Belt is W/H 1577 or Gates 6828, which is a 1/2" X 28" V belt.

The PTO tensioner pulley is still available from Toro under P/N 92-7102 (old # 1623) and can also be found in the aftermarket. (Such as Stens)

Take the old one to your local mower shop and ask them to match it.

Mike hit it "right on the money". The only attachment I've seen to use the outer groove (actually the two outer grooves) is the old-style snowthrower. (like the ST-3072 on my 704)

What does the HY-2 or HY-3 (if you had one) run on? I thought one of the grooves was available for that...

It has its own pulley that gets added to the outside of the original 3 groove pulley, Kevin. (The hydraulic pumps use a 3/8 inch wide belt. At least my HY-2 does.)
