I posted this in the picture gallery March 1973 Popular Mechanics Article It shows prices of, not only Wheel Horse, but other brands. Not all makes and models are shown, but it does show that Wheel Horse were sort of pricey back in the day.

No, not really. Wheel Horse's equivalent is over $2000. The JD 140 was considered a "first" in the industry, especially the H3, though the one listed on the list is a H1. The 140 had direct drive, full hydraulics, etc. Wheel Horse had the hydrostatic drive before JD (and IH), but....The rest of the industry was a little behind the 140, IH didn't really have anything until they came out with the 149 in 1971. One could argue that Bolens might have been ahead of the pack, as they had shaft drive, hydraulics, etc. before the rest of the industry. In fact, IH didn't really have a direct drive tractor until the 70/100 in 1963 and it was design after the head of IH's lawn and garden department saw a Bolens and wanted a drive shaft for the deck.
