Fiddlestix 0 #1 Posted August 10, 2010 I have a non-original to WH kohler K301 that may need a rod. I have not tore down the engine yet. It is not a WH spec engine but is a spec #47186b. I cannot locate a serial on the engine. While perusing the Kohler parts manual, I continue to come up with two possible TYPES of connecting rods based on serial number (these two types are then further available in STD and +.010"). Is there a way to determine which I need with out the serial number? Is there a visible difference? I think it may be as minor as the type of fastener used... Posilock nuts or capscrews and lock tabs. Can anybody nail this down for me??? I am pretty sure it is a long dipper vs short dipper. Thanks folks!
rickv1957 73 #2 Posted August 10, 2010 If you have the big pan(k301s) takes the long dipper, the 301as takes the short dipper,Rick
Fiddlestix 0 #3 Posted August 10, 2010 I am fairly certain it is not a short dipper rod. However, the parts list shows these six total part numbers: Connecting rod (STD) Before s/n 1729900013 use: 47 067 09 After S/N 179900003 use: 45 067 24 Connecting Rod (STD) (short dipper) A-235991 Connecting rod (.010): Before s/n 1729900013 use: 47 067 01 After S/N 179900003 use: 45 067 25 Connecting Rod (.010) (short dipper) A-235991-10 So I am pretty certain that the "A" numbers (for short dipper) do not apply. But I cannot determine which of the others fit without the serial. Talking to an engine parts house, the lad was adamant "there is only one rod for it"! He may be correct and the four long dipper numbers all are the correct functioning, but clearly there is some difference related to the serial. Looking at the service manual, it states torque values and proceedures for two types of fasteners on the cap, Posilock nuts or capscrews and lock plates. That may very well be the only difference. I do not know. A whole rod assembly may be interchangeable (within the big end tolerance). Thoughts?
TT-(Moderator) 1,147 #4 Posted August 10, 2010 Tear it apart and get the number off of the beam of the current connecting rod - then you'll know for sure. Chances are the biggest difference is the cap fasteners. @Rick: there are "A" suffix engines with long dipper rods. That is dependent on which special pan it has, not just the fact that it has one.
