Have a rattle in a K341

Recommended Posts

Got a K341 that had a slight rattle when running. Not much but a rattle is a rattle. Took the pan off and the only thing that I can get to make a noise is the balance gears. I read enough to know they can be trashed. Has anybody been successful getting the rear one out without removing the crank?? Dumb question?? I hope not.

Thanks,

Break the "thin side" off of the gear with a chisel so the gear will slide past the crankshaft. (you aren't going to reuse the gear anyhow, right? )

Sometimes I get lucky and the gear will actually split in two through the bearing bore. They come off much easier when that happens. :D

Well the gears are out but when I turn it by hand I get a couple ticks when the valves move. I checked the clearances but they seem to be within spec. It doesn't tick when the piston bottoms. Only when it peaks and the valves move. Could the ACR be making the noise or is a couple ticks a common sound?? I have the head off and it really looks like a rebuild was done at some time. Everything seems tight....

Any thoughts??

Edit: I isolated the noise to the valve area. I held the valves open and no clicks. Must be the lifters striking the valves making a ticking noise. Maybe I was a little paranoid.
