woodys3b 0 #1 Posted July 28, 2010 Got my vapor lock issues solved. Thanks for all the help with that. Next issue: When I hit a sharp bump, my Kohler 12 stumbles for about a second. Sounds like the ignition is turned off then on quickly. I suspect the float is not set correctly. How do I check this and what should it be set at? I'm considering just rebuilding the carb. Are there rebuild kits available?
pfrederi 18,698 #2 Posted July 28, 2010 Rebuild lits are available. Check out the pinned link above and/or get a Kohler Service manual free down load form Kohler site. The float setting is, if i recall, expressed in 64ths of an inch. (kind of precise for a fairly simple operation.... I prefer my old case farm tractor guidance "about parallel to the carb body" Float issue would also manifest itself in you were mowing on a slope. Just out of curiosity (since you said "like the ignition turned off) have you checked the wiring to your coil. (or to the kill if it is a Magnum series) A loose connection or faulty safety switch could be an issue that a sharp bump would trigger.
woodys3b 0 #3 Posted July 28, 2010 Since I spend a good deal of time mowing on some fairly extreme slopes with no issue, I'll spend some time looking at electrical connections. Thanks
WheelHorse_of_course 99 #4 Posted July 28, 2010 Woody, In cases like this an in-line neon bulb spark checker works well. Put it in line with the coil and you will be able to see if it is the ignition (or interlocks). Really handy in a case like this. They go for a few bucks from Harbor Freight or others.
woodys3b 0 #5 Posted July 28, 2010 Cool! I didn't know something like that existed. Thanks
pfrederi 18,698 #6 Posted July 28, 2010 Sorry I was asleep this morning...were you mowing at the time (i.e. PTO engaged???) If so it is most likely the seat safety switch. Big bump your butt goes up and the system thinks you fell off killing the ignition...you land back on the seat switch closes and everything is back to normal
Jim_Rockford 0 #7 Posted July 28, 2010 Mine was doing the same thing ,I pulled the bowl and it was full of gunk I suspect was from ethonol crap , gell balls ,and gunk, Wiped it out and made sure the main jet passage was clean and it runs like a top.
