tommy3horse 3 #1 Posted July 25, 2010 Hello everyone; I recently bought a "barn find' C-120. The PO said that it was worn-out and needed a rebuild. I got it home and pulled the head and found the head gasket blown. I also noticed the exhaust valve was badly burnt. So off came the motor. I pulled it apart last night and found the piston and rings fine along with a nice bore...only out .001 on dia., and hardly tapered. I also noticed that the balance gears were extremely loose. I was kinda happy that I noticed. So, come Monday, a new valve and gear bearings as well as new rings are coming from Kohler as well as the necessary gaskets. Everything else looks great, and yes, I am leaving the balance gears in. Will keep you'all posted on the firing of the motor sometime on Tuesday. Is a great lookin' tractor with low hours. Hope to find-out how to post pics soon, 'cause I know everybody likes photos. Tom :D

Duff 206 #4 Posted July 26, 2010 Tom, I'm no engine man - far from it, but I'd be leery as h*ll of those loose balance gears....I think I've read here a number of times that the best idea is simply to pull them and turn them into scrap before they turn your motor into a grenade. tommy3horse 3 #5 Posted July 26, 2010 Hi Guys and thanks for the concern over the balance gears. I ordered new pins, bearings and I have a good asst. of shims. They will be installed to tolorences. Besides, it is the way Kohler intended, and Iam no engineer by any means. I had my brother, the machinest, clean-up the intake valve in the lathe and I lapped it in this morning. The exhaust valve...which was badly burnt came-in this morning, I need to lap it in as well. With any luck at all, I should have it back together tomorrow. tommy3horse 3 #6 Posted August 6, 2010 Get her going. Started on the third revolution. Adjusted the carb a bit and then went and cut grass today for about 2 hours. Runs great. Thanks to all who helped me on this project. Tom
