ok so i worked on the 654 for a few hours today. started by getting the starter to align right. a little shimming with washers and we were cranking. didn't have spark so i pulled the flywheel off figured out how to get to the points and cleaned them. assembled it all and got a nice blue spark. knowing i had spark i started to crank the motor and sprayed a little ether in there and i finally got it to run for maybe 3 seconds. sounded great. tried to get it to fire again, no luck. checked compression. 65 psi, seems low to me but i have no clue. took the carb off and started to clean that. in while letting the needles soak i thought i would pull the breather and check the valves, maybe thats why it has low compression. got the filter screen out of the oil breather then hit the backing plate. i would assume the valves are behind this plate but it didn't want to budge.

all that said i called it a night. so to all those on here who are tecumseh whisperers any tips on what to do next? is there a pdf manual out there? i did some looking but i couldn't find a manual. any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Justin

The carb will need a good cleaning and adjustment, I had mine apart about 4 times when I was working on the 653, put in an inline filter since the sediment bowl only works on the heavy and larger particles. Also my H60 motor has a fuel pump on the front like k series kohlers, if your motor has one you will want to check to make sure its pumping fuel to the carb. If the motor has not been run in a while there may be corrosion on the valves so they are not seating properly, I would run it for a while and see if your compression gets better.

well i had to do some painting in the barn for work today so while letting coats dry i tinkered with the motor a little more. soaked the carb last night and all the parts. put it all back together with 1.5 turns out on the idle mixture and 1 turn out on the main. got it all bolted back up and after cranking for a little while and a jump start from some starter fluid she was running under her own power. seemed to run pretty high but it was on full choke. i'm fairly certain i have a large air leak. there is this adapter that goes between the carb and the motor block and the gasket between the carb and this adapter is about .125" thick. well i'm sure at one time it was soft but its pretty hard as a rock now. anyway, at some point in time a PO tightened the carb down so much that it bent the ears where where the mounting bolts go through quite a bit. even after i tightened it back up there was still a gap in the middle. So I'll either find a new gasket or more than likely clean it off really well and apply a little grey RTV around it to seal it up. but man she ran like a champ on choke. still think its a screwy motor but hey if it runs i'm happy

Definatly go with a fuel filter before the carb. The 65psi might be because the motor has a compression release for starting purposes. (could be wrong on this) If the book says no, you'll problably have some other problem. (head gasket, rings, vavles). Should be up around 100psi. Good luck.

thats the thing about the book... it covers like 100 motors. real pain really. i will make sure to throw a fuel filter before it. right now it doesn't even have the right gas tank so i need to track one down or most likely I'll just build one that fits under the hood where the old one was.
