Pull Start with Electric Start? Is that possible?

Recommended Posts

primerk5

I picked up 753 a few weeks ago. The electrical system works fine and It will start itself with a good battery. I was wondering if there was a pull starter I could add to keep me from having to buy a battery. I would also like to retain the original starting system since I believe it is original to the tractor. It seems to start easy enough, and for the amount of use this tractor will get, buying a battery to maintain doesn't seem practical.

I know this may seem like a petty little thing, but one less battery is one less expense. With the amount of toys I have that require batterys to run, one less would be great.

Thanks

Yes you can. Here's a picture of my 753 which was converted to a pull start;

I removed all of the electronic ignition parts and changed out the stator on the flywheel to a magnet style. Starts on the first pull every time and there's no battery to worry about.

My Snapper walk behind lawn mower is both electric and pull start. My wife could not start my last Snapper with pull start only. Well by God I took are of that!!:D

I was hoping to not eliminate the electrical starter/Generator, Is that possible? I see how yours mounts and there aren't holes in the belt shield for that.

With out changing the ignition system you will need a batt. to run the ign. so in short no.

Buy a good batt. and a battery. tender, it is a small wall plug sold at many stores I got mine a harbor freight for $3 I use them in the winter on my work tractors so the battery has a full charge and keeps it from freezing, they work all year round if needed.

I'm planning on leaving the battery that is bad on it. So the ignition system would work fine. I just want to basically find a pull starter assembly to bolt onto the end of the engine and leave the ignition system and charging system as is.

If the batt. is no good how will it power the ign.?? no juice to the points no spark, you will not be able to have the gen. still hooked up with the pull start.

I guess the generator is providing enough power to run the engine. What your saying sounds as if the engine doesn't contain its own ignition system with the internal system to provide spark. I would think that the engine still has its own system for providing spark.

The battery is bad enough that the amp meter will only show charging when another battery is hooked up via jumper cables.

It does run with the bad battery by itself.

I kinda figured that due to the shield I wouldn't be able to use a pull start with retracting cord.

Maybe I can find something to bolt on to the four bolts that hold the screen on. One of those old pull starters that you wrap the cord around might work. Just need to figure out how to get it to bolt up. (adapter)

If your battery is not completely dead, then the tractor will probably run OK off the generator - just like it will do after you start it with jumper leads and then disconnect them.

But your problem will be that the big recoil housing for the Kohler will pevent you running the pulley and the belt for the starter/generator.

There are some starter cups that mount inder the flywheel nut that have a cutout in them for a rope, but off the top of my head I cant remember which engines had them.

I feel your pain about buying batteries, I've bought 4 in the last 6 months, and I still have to swap them around the tractors. I had another one die last weekend, and one of my projects has reached the stage of needing a battery too.

Your tractor will run without a good battery, but it's probably hard on the voltage regulator and coil to not have the filtering capacitance the battery provides.

Pull the starter/gen belt guard off and look at the engine pulley. It should have a groove around the outside perimeter with a rope notch in it. Factory installed emergency backup starter.

If thats your plan you will have to find a double pulley so you can keep the Gen belt on. But keep in mind if your battery is completey flat you will not have enough power to fire the ignition. The gen. wont take over till you get it running unless you can pull it fast enough to excite the gen, and you may need bat voltage to even get the gen going. $0 bucks for a battery is going to be cheaper thant the alteratives
