Polaris2007 4 #1 Posted July 18, 2010 I just got a free Kohler KT17 out of a John Deere 317. I heard it run before I disected it. It ran smoothly, but was blowing oil out the oil fill extremely badly. This is one of the early Kohler twins that had the issue with insufficient lubrication. I'm thinking about honing the cylinders, throwing some new rings in, and seeing how much life I can get out of it. But I need to do some measuring first. Cylinder "out of round" and ring gap, etc. Does anyone know where I could find a service manual for this engine? Or if someone has a manual, maybe they could photocopy the pages I need and send them? Or just email me the numbers? Any help will be greatly appriciated. Thanks, Jon H.
bmuone 15 #2 Posted July 18, 2010 I have a 74 page downloaded manual on the kohler 17hp engine. I think I can attach it to an email. Is that too large email for you? I can find the site where I downloaded it it you rather do it that way.

Butch 194 #5 Posted July 18, 2010 Nevermind! I just found the service manual on Kohler's website. Thanks a bunch for offering to help out though! --Jon H. You can get that manual cheaper on Ebay than going through Kohlers. It's not a reprint either. Butch S. Jersey

pfrederi 18,698 #8 Posted July 18, 2010 I put a Kohler KT 17 from a JD 317 into my C175. Works well but there are a few things to keep in mind. JD did not specify ball bearings on the crankshaft...just sleeve bearings. That will be an issue if you want to use the manual PTO.. I switched to an electric. Also the JD Kohler had only a 1" crankshaft not 1-1/8. There was also an issue with the choke and throttle mounting on the carb if you want it to fit under the C175 hood. You need to keep your WH carb, intake manifold and exhaust manifolds air cleaner etc.....
