To Bore or not to bore...That is the Question....

Okay, I have this 10hp K-series Kohler, and it has a rapping sound coming from somewhere within. It runs like an absolute dream. No smoke whatsoever. So I'm thinking worn rod bearing? bad case of piston slap? Anyway, I want to rebuild it, and I'm considering boring it out even if it doesn't need it, for the reason of gaining horsepower. If I were to bore a 10hp Kohler .030 over, how much hp would be gained with no other modifications? Probably not enough to make it worth the money for a new piston/rings and the machining costs? Are we talking about a fraction of a hp gain, or would it instantly become a 12hp? Any thoughts?

I don't know how much HP you will gain... I don't think much of any as the longer stroke in combo with the bigger bore makes the extra HP in the 12/14. I also think that if you bore it "thirty" over you will have bored the block to its max leaving no room for future rebuilds should it get scored or wear itself out.

Just my thoughts

Tony

I would bore it if it needs bored but not soley for a power boost.

Don't know if you can get a bigger piston, but the K241 is built on a K301 block. Should be able to bore to the maximum allowed on the K301 without problems.

If I am wrong, someone please correct me.

I agree with Rick..... if you bore 30 over for performance reasons you'll be not impressed.

some 10 hp are k301 (12hp ) blocks not all so check before you bore but if it is a k301 block 10 hp motor it might be cheaper to just install a stock 12 hp piston on it

Right you are Jordon.

Look behind the PTO plate for the embossed "K301" to be sure.
