DMK855 15 #1 Posted July 13, 2010 I was enjoying my day off today tinkering with a couple of tractors until I got to the 607!! When I got this tractor, I was told before it was parked, it would start with in three pulls. I tinkered with it in Pa. while on vacation and needless to say after multiple blisters and an electronic ign. module I got it to run very erratic for a few minutes. Had the same results when we got it home and off of the trailer. Knowing that the carb. was more than likely gummed up from sitting 2 years I removed it and took it apart. After finding the corrosion and worn throttle shaft, I ordered a new Tec. carb. After anxiously installing it this morning with the little guy helping (He was waiting for the test ride!!) I pulled and pulled and pulled......... Nothing more than a pop here and a pop there!!! I then removed the head to check for carbon and pos. stuck valve. Nothing....... clean as a whistle!! I know the engine will run, just not with the new carb. Any suggestions?? I know the Kohler would be the hot ticket as I have a complete K181 awaiting a tractor, but I woulld like to keep it original!! Thanks for any input!! I WILL WIN IN THE END........... I hope!!!! Coadster32 793 #2 Posted July 14, 2010 Did you try either down the spark plug hole to elimiante the carb being the issue? Points/condenser, spark plug? In the past, and am actually doing right now, is timing out the spark to fire at the proper height to TDC. I had a rupp minibike, that once I timed it out correctly, ran like $1,000,000. With the head off and a depth micrometer, you can turn the whole stator plate to accomplish this. (You need to re-gap the point every time you move it though). Just a few ideas for you. Good luck.
DMK855 15 #3 Posted July 14, 2010 Coadster...... I pulled the point in exchange for the electronic module. I have good spark and did spray gas into the carb. Still just a pop here and a pop there!! I will look for a copy of the manual and try the timing. I am also going to do a compression and leak down test tonight. I may go back to the points also. The original ones were corroded real bad. Thanks, Dwayne
jimt1971 237 #4 Posted July 14, 2010 If you put on new points and condensor you should be set. Sounds like your timing is off. Jim
DMK855 15 #5 Posted July 14, 2010 Picked up a set of points and a condensor at lunch time! Buying the points broke the ice with the guy at the small engine shop! Said it was nice to see people bringing the old stuff back to life and said if I had any questions, to feel free to call!! But he also thought the same as you guys.......... Said points, condensor, and set the timing!! He also said the modules will not work right on the tecumseh engines with the coil under the flywheel!!! Now I know!! I will update with progress in a day or two!!
DMK855 15 #6 Posted July 15, 2010 UPDATE!! I WON!! Starts and runs. I set the timing at .032" BTC with the points gapped at .020". It started on the fourth pull. Restarted on the first or second pull every time, once I set the idle. I need to fine tune the carb, but I did not want to terrorize the neighbors too bad. That and my help had to get ready for bed!! Coadster32 793 #7 Posted July 15, 2010  Glad to hear it. The carbs are known to be a little finnicky. I always put an inline fuel filter on, and run the carb dry. Hardly ever have a problem when you do that, as it keeps the gunk and buildup out. Good job.
DMK855 15 #8 Posted July 15, 2010 Thanks Coadster!! I will be sure to take that advice!!

She is used year around. I also have a TroyBilt tiller with an HH60. She gets used about 2 hours per year. I have an in line filter on her as well. Also I put stabil in the gas and when I am done turn off the gas valve and and let her run out of gas. She starts the next year on 2-3 pulls.....

frankiefiredog 1 #11 Posted July 15, 2010 Good job there! ,working on an old tucky myself,Rick Me too. I'll have to start another thread Rick. I've taken a few picutres of the inside of my HH120. Hopefully I will have similar luck seen with this project Glad she's running for you!
squonk 43,869 #12 Posted July 15, 2010 Nothing like workin on a "Techy" to get the juices flowing! On a similar note, My 7 horse Kohler wouldn't start. Replace points and runs like a top. Tried out the deck. Needed some gear adjustments. Get the deck back together and on the tractor. Time for some serious mowing! Fire it up, drive 50 ft. and the fuel pump dies. :D
Coadster32 793 #13 Posted July 16, 2010 Fire it up, drive 50 ft. and the fuel pump dies. Son-of-a-........

DMK855 15 #15 Posted July 16, 2010 Don't worry squonk, I was saying the same thing on Tuesday pulling on the 607!!! As for the 607, walked past it in the garage today and thought I should try to start it. Turned the gas on and had to pull it 3 times!! Not going to complain about that!! Still restarts on the first or second pull!!
