701 starting problems

Recommended Posts

Wheel Horse wanna-be

I have 701 with K181 engine and new battery. Was starting OK and now the solinoid clicks but starter doesn't turn. Shorted across solinoid but still wouldn't turn over. Is starter/generator bad. Suggestions?

Could be many things based on what you've wrote and done so far, unfortunately you've not supplied enough information to determine the cause.

If it was working for a while then not, could be your battery isn't charging (charging circuit issue). If the solenoid is clicking that is normally an indicator that battery voltage is low. I suggest first thing is to fully charge the battery out of the tractor, if the battery charges OK and if the engine starts OK after it is installed then begin checks on your charging circuits.

Try this manual for further troubleshooting of the issue:

It has a new fully charged battery, manual does not cover 701, no help. It is not the charging circuits. Could be the starter is locked up even though engine will turn over by hand. All cables were checked to make sure they were OK and tight.

Is it a starter generator or a gear starter?

Have you removed the belt from the starter generator and turned the unit by hand to see it is binding (bearing problem)?

Have you tried the starter, after removing the belt, to see if it spins up without a load (brushes/commutator issues)?

Take a look at page 29 of this manual:

http://www.mywheelhorse.com/graphics/file/...1_1972-SM-2.pdf

The innards can be inspected with a little dis-assembly, and the Starter/Generator can be rebuilt, parts are relatively inexpensive (~$20 - $25 for a rebuild kit).

Thanks guys for the help. I tried all suggestions before removing generator. A spring that holds the brush against the armature was broken. Brush holder looks like it is rivited to case. Where do I get a replacement generator and voltage regulator that is close to original 701 part?

OK, I just read page 29, where can I get new brush holders?

Post a picture of the broken brush holder. I believe the parts are available. The cost of even a rebuilt starter/generator with regulator is well over $200.00.

Never having had a spring break on one I've rebuilt, I never really took a good look at the way the arms attach. I don't have a certain answer, but do have a suggestion.

I know the springs are available in some of the automotive and JD starter/generator rebuild kits. Is there any way the arm can be removed from the shaft so you can replace the spring?

How is the arm held on the shaft? Is it a peened-over shaft? If it's a peened-over shaft you might be able to grind the peened area away with a Dremel tool and a dental bit, replace the spring, then support the back side of the shaft with a heavy punch and re-peen the head over again. I know that Cub Cadet used to sell the Holders years ago, but I've not seen a supplier have them in a long time. Also, I've seen a few of these on eBay for less than $30 including shipping.

Has anyone else replaced a spring, our found a supplier for replacement brush holders?

Found springs and holders on e-bay, $20 to include shipping. They are for a Delco Remy generator. You just unhook spring and holder slides up off of pin. I/ll leave one side as is until get one finished. Will also replace brushes and clean/file groves while I have it apart. Will also check auto parts store before ordering from e-bay.

Thanks MIKESRJ for the advise and help. I will be back on line as I continue my WH projects. The 701 which needs a hood and pully cover and a few other items to make original. I have a 1257 that has a carb issue, will use it for pulling and other jobs. I also have a 656 on blocks as my future restoration, all original but needs brown removed and returned to red. I mow with a JD.

Having a dificult time not buying more WHs.
