Working on the Horse that My Dad left me

Hi, Im looking for information on interchangability of the steering sector and the pivot that is found on the other end of the steering shaft. Does any other model WH's share the same assembly as the 702?.

Im fixing up the WH that my Dad left me .I think it was a 502 origionally because the shifter is more straight than that on my 702 but I decided to turn it into a 702 seeing as it already has a K161S in it and all. Right now I am working repairing the cruddy "modifications" that a previous owner did to it when they moved the a engine back a good bit and the battery way forward and in the process lengthened the frame 9 inches total. When they did it they also altered the mounting point of the front axle moving it forward too, etc. Whoever did it, decided the origional 3/4 dia steering shaft needed to be beefier or something so they cobbled up one out of 7/8 round stock, in the process they bored the sector out to 7/8 and then brazed it on to the shaft instead of using a roll pin. Boy oh boy did they butcher it all up.The pivot on the front end of the shaft is a homemade mess which they slid over the sfaft and put a big bolt thru.In short they really hacked it all up. They even had to grind down the diameter of the shaft to clear the 3/4 bar stock that passes thru the frame that the foot rests mount to. UGH!!!! Anyway, back to the steering sector assembly, I need to either these buy 2 parts that attach with the roll pins or if need be the whole steering shaft with the parts attached. I dont really need the shaft because I have some 3/4 round stock that I can cut to length and drill for the roll pins but if I need to buy it all together thats ok too,its just that without the shaft shipping would be sheaper.

After a week or so of work I got the frame back to origional, I removed the cobbled frame extension, and repaired the frame where they hacked it up and welded closed all the holes they drilled into the frame and fabricated a new battery box and strap for it. I still need to repair the frame where they "modified" the frame where the front end of the steering sector shaft slides into the front of the frame.Other than that last repair I still need to d,, Im really happy with the results, now Im just short the sector assembly. I had given serious thought to making it a narrow front/trike due to all the butchering that the PO had done but I decided to return it to the origional design.

Will the sector assembly from another model interchange with my 702? If there are other models that will interchange it will open up my options in my search for the parts.I just need to be sure to find parts that have good roll pin holes so it wont be sloppy.

I attached some pics of what I started with and what Ive done thus far.It got so bad steering parts started to fall off so thats why I decided to redo everything.The box on the front of the frame is the battery box they made. The "welds" were pretty nasty to say the least.

Despite my whining, Ive really had a lot of fun returning it back to origional,I always have fun working on my Wheel Horses, its actually really relaxing , well except for when welding sparks went down into my shoe.. yikes I need some boots I still have a long way to go but Im enjoying every minute of it.I need to make a set of spindles for it also like the ones I made for my 702.

To answer your question about other models that used the same steering parts, 502, 552, and 702 definitely. I don't know if the 701 shared any of those parts.

As for the shifter being different from your 702.. The bent shifter was a mid year change to clear the pump reservoir on the HY-2 lift system. The HY-s instructions show where and how to bend the earlier shifter to match the later one.

So if I understand you correctly, you're looking for the Steering Pivot that goes on the front of the lower steering shaft, and the fan shaped steering sector that goes on the end of the same shaft, right? You are limited in the models that used these parts.

The steering pivot is part 3918 and was only used in the tractors that had the same flat front end on the frame, and used one tie rod from the steering pivot to the left spindle and then a flat drag link between the two spindles. After that , they changed to a two tie rod system and the steering pivot was different.

The fan gear steering sector is part 4413 and was used on all models from 62-64. (The 701 comes out of this list because it's part is a larger fan and unique to that model).

Hey, thank you for the incredible information, its exactly what I was hoping to find out, now I can widen my search and see what I can scare up.Thanks for the information on why the shifter is shaped the way it is too, I wondered why one had a different bend than the other then I noticed that most 502's that I have seen seemed like they had this shifter so I assumed it was just the way a 502 was . I have been thinking about bending it like the the one on my 702 but Im going to wait untill I can drive it again so I can see which I like better. Its been years since Dads WH was driven so I dont remember too much of about it ,well I do remember that if you werent carefull and pulled up on the steering wheel, the gear on the steering wheel shaft would pull up and disengage the sector and from there it went wherever it wanted to. Before we found out about this minor steering trait, my Dad let my son JJ drive it when JJ was about 7 or so and.... well he pulled up and then he couldnt steer it so it went thru Dads wood fence and ran into a peach tree.It was running a little above an idle in 1st or 2nd gear so he was going real slow. Thankfully He didnt get hurt at all, but when it was all said and done and we knew JJ didnt get hurt. Dad and I couldnt stop laughing,Then I fixed the fence.Thankfully I brought another pair or underwear and pants with us for my son tho... Just kidding about the pants and underwear He maintained perfect controll of his bodily functions ....as he screamed at the top of his lungs from across the yard for me to turn it off!

I cant wait to snag some more parts and such so I can start making more headway on it. I will go out and find something to tinker with on it just for something to do. Hopefully I can find the sector and pivot and shaft if need be without too much trouble. Im also going to change the front wheels eventually, these are super wide which makes it steer a bit harder than with narrow wheels but the major reason is that the hub is much narrower on these wide rims from the outside of the inner bearing to the outside of the outer bearing which requires a spacer between the inner edge of the spindle and the bearing to make up for the narrower hub. Eventually I want to get another set of front wheels like the ones that came with the 702 but that is something I can do later, its not crucial at this point. Im just wanting to get it 100% mechanicly sound then I will work on the minor stuff then the purely cosmetic stuff last. Below is a picture of Dad giving JJ a ride on it a long time ago. It looks pretty good in the picture from a distance with the hood on,but once the hood came off... ewwwww. I sure miss my Dad, he was the greatest and I will always Love him with all my heart!!!!!!

When I first saw the pic of the frame I was thinking 'WHY', but I see it was for the extended hood and front mounted battery. Looks like you're on the way, but I would have went to my bone pile for a frame. Don't remember your spindles but I have made a few that seem to work fine. I have a box full of steering parts that you colud pick thru if you were closer or if you know the dimensions just PM me and you can have them for the shipping. . Mike

Thank you for all the advice, help and the kind words. I really love that picture of Dad with JJ, it reminds me of the wonder relationship that Dad and I always shared to, I was blessed with incredibly wonderfull loving parents,sadly they were called to the Lord much too soon (not that there ever a good time) but Roger, you said it all, love your parents,family... all your loved ones ...like its the last day you might have them with you on this earth, you never know .... it happened with both my parents that way but 20 years or so apart, I never saw it coming. My prayer would be that everyone in the world could be blessed with parents like mine, I know not all people were or are and it makes me really sad,its just so important to to thankfull for the wonderfull people in your life each and every day,

Sorry I didnt mean to babble on about that, its just that where my Mom and Dad are conserned, well its very emotional subject for me so I tend to get carried away, Im very sentimental

Well Im super happy to say that thanks to ol550 who set me up with some really awesome parts ,I now have the sector and pivot so I can get the steering working on Dads Horse. I am going to have a great weekend tinkering with it Woo Hoo !!!!!

I live in really small town called St David. Theres about 2000 residents here, its a ranching/farming comminity, which is about an hr east of tucson and 16 minutes north of Tombstone. Its toward the lower SE section of Az near the bottom of the state about 45 minutes or so from mexico. It was a cool place to go to High School, in '81 when I graduated there were about 100 high school students total, 28 were in my senior class, I really liked it,The school was K thru 12. It was great,I love small towns.

I have a possible clue which should indicate what model it was origionally. It has a knock out plug where the starter button would normally be and the serial number/shift pattern sticker is covering it. The the ignition switch hole has a nice push in plug in it. I think this might have been a 502 in a previous life.What do you think, it sounds like a 502 because they didnt need either switch but im not sure if im right or not. I guess it doesnt really matter because Im making it into another 702 because I dont have the engine to make it a 502 and it already has a good running K161 in it.

Today I started to repair the part of the frame at the front where the steering shaft passes thru it. The person that butchered the frame evidentally tried to repair the 3/4" hole that the shaft passes thru by 5/8 long piece of pipe with a roughly 3/4"ID onto a piece of flat stock and welded it on top of the piece that the shaft passes thru.Evidentalli the hole was messed up or something. Now I am carefully removing the "repair" and then I have to clean it up and weld a repair piece to it and grind it down. I would like to remove the origional piece and fabricate a new piece out of 1/4" plate if I can find a piece large enough to make it with. my funds are very limited so I dont want to have to buy a whole piece of 1/4 plate unless there is no other way. I have some friends that sell, scrap steel etc to the recyclers in Tucson but if they have what I need they will sell it to me. The template wont be a problem, it looks like its the exact same diamentions as the piece that caps the front of the frame that the lower grill bolt passes thru. So the search is on tomorrow for a piece of donor 1/4 " plate. I dont think it will be too hard to locate a piece.

I didnt repair this piece when I did the rest of the frame because at that point I wasnt sure if I was going to make it into a narrow front similar to TT's or return it to the origional front steering arrangement.

PS..... for some strange reason I cant spell to save my life today, it seems like every word I type is misspelled... see I just spelled type wrong and had to fix it. Ive gone thru my post and fixed all that I noticed but please forgive me if I missed a zillion more, it took 3 hrs to fix the ones I noticed Oh Well it's just been one of those days
