Kelly 1,033 #1 Posted July 5, 2010 I did the impossible, I got a Tucky running as good as any Kohler I own, took me a whole day, not 10 min. like a Kohler but I did it I picked up a Ranger last year and just tucked it in the barn, never tried to start it, yesterday I dragged it out to see if it would run, it sat for about 10 years in a barn before I picked it up, I swapped the carb with one I rebuilt for another tractor, shot a bit of carb cleaner in it and pulled the rope, it started right up lots of tinkering with the carb now it starts with one pull, and climbs hills with ease, it even ides down low and still pulls right along, heck I even got off, and walked beside it to adjust the carb my kid drove it for 20 min. with out a hicup at all, best running tucky I ever seen, the only good running tucky I own sorry I had to share my joy, now tomorrow it might prove me wrong but for today I won. :D

squonk 43,843 #5 Posted July 5, 2010 Tucky's are like K-cars. They might run good today, but be ready with a screwdriver and a hammer tomorrow!
buckeye 5 #6 Posted July 5, 2010 I can relate to your joy Kelly. When I got the h60 in my ranger to purr like a kitten I was overjoyed, and so far has been doing so whenever i fire it up. I bought a short block from Lane Ranger at Mentone this spring, coupled with parts from original h60, and "whoala." It even has oringinal carb. One practice i use, which I think I learned on here, is to run the fuel out of the carb at the end of the day. It was nice to prove my dad wrong when he said "A tucky will never run as good as a kohler."
Roger from southern Iowa 1 #7 Posted July 5, 2010 Congrats!! You just have to treat them like a lady.

pfrederi 18,690 #9 Posted July 5, 2010 The Tecumseh in my L-107 Starts as fast or faster than any Kohler I have and is ready to go to work immediately even in the winter...Kohlers have to warm up...
Raider12 13 #10 Posted July 5, 2010 Good for you Kelly, It does feel good to "win" compared to the times you have to work your tail off and still not come out ahead. Good for you
DMK855 15 #11 Posted July 5, 2010 I have an h60 to send you!! If you can get two to run like a Kohler you know it is not a fluke!! Congrats!! :D
sorekiwi 761 #12 Posted July 5, 2010 I say you're full of it Kelly! I'm not buying any of this for a second...
rwilson 128 #13 Posted July 5, 2010 My dad made an HH120 run good about 3 years ago. It had no spark, so he hooked up a mopar ignition on it and it has ran ever since.

Doubletrouble 10 #15 Posted July 5, 2010 I have a tucky in my '71 and she runs great summer and winter.I hit the key and she fires up by the 3rd revolution every time. I've never had a kohler to compare but I'm happy with what I have.
Kelly 1,033 #16 Posted July 5, 2010 I'm not joking Mike it really runs great, well it did yesterday, I didn't mess with it today, I'll try it tomorrow, I hope it runs good for the MI WH show as it's my wifes tractor, I need to put a batt. in it so it will start with a key, I don't see her yanking a rope to start it. pfrederi 18,690 #17 Posted July 5, 2010 The tecumseh powered L107 went about a mile down the road today to bring home a sick Charger 12 on a snow mobile trailer.... Yet again the Tecumseh brings home the Kohler.... Did some serious wheelies trying to start out uphill with the trailer and the Charger on board....
linen beige 15 #18 Posted July 6, 2010 I have a Lauson V-55D on a tiller that runs GREAT. After I switched the Walbro LMG for a Carter "N".
sorekiwi 761 #19 Posted July 6, 2010 I must admit that the H55 that used to be on my 502, ran like it should with a Carter N carb on it. Put the Walbro back on (after pulling it apart for the 50th time) and it was a total POS. The K161 that replaced it starts instantaneously when you turn the key...
Kelly 1,033 #20 Posted July 11, 2010 Update, I havn't started the Tucky in near a week, I went out today set the choke gave the rope a pull, it fired, I pushed the choke halfway in and it started on the next pull, pushed the choke all the way in, throttled it up fast still runs like a top, then felling cocky, I pulled my 656 out and started to mess with it trying to make that Tucky run right, well it now has a 8hp Kohler in it from a 857 parts tractor, but I pulled my 603 up front and messed with that till I got it running very nice, starts on the first pull warm, we will see in a day or two how that one does, I guess two out of three aint bad :D
FarmerJim 5 #21 Posted July 11, 2010 My hat is off to you kelly! I am working on an h-50 right now that has sat for five years or more. Have had the carb apart and cleaned and reassembled and it starts right off but it surges, on and on and on. I've messed with it all afternoon and just can't get it to come out of it
Kelly 1,033 #22 Posted July 11, 2010 I found the carbs are VERY touchy, you need to turn the screws/jets very slowly and very little at a time and I mean very little, I set the low speed screw till it idled very smooth, then ran it half throttle and set the high speed, then tweeked it at full throttle, then did it all over again till I got it fine tuned. rickv1957 75 #23 Posted July 11, 2010 Kelly, this is a great thread as I like the tuckys and the tips on tuning are great info, thanks Rick
stevasaurus 23,281 #24 Posted July 11, 2010 I am very happy for you Kelly. I too like the techy's, and as you know...have a HT55C. I have gotten it to start on the 2nd pull after sitting, and the 1st pull when it is warm...but haven't got rid of the surges. I like your last post about very fine adjustments. Can't wait to try that. I read every thing posted about the techy's. It is a challenge. but like you say...very rewarding when it goes well. thanks
