need help to identify tractor

:D I just bought a tractor for my son and I to restore before next wheel horse show but I need help to know exactly what it is all help is greatly appreciated and also what you think it is worth

Looks like a 1960 400 or 1961 401 Suburban but has a 58 or 59 hood on it.

i just seen the motor is off a crapsman mower at least it has the sticker on it

It's definitely a 1960.

It could be a 400 or a 550, but it's not easy to tell with the changes that have been made.

Do you have a better picture of the front of the toolbox?

here are some more pics and i found a plate in the tool box with the model number 143-596042 and seriel 0034 16375 i beleive its motor thoe

Parts could have been changed/added in the last 50 years, but based on the fact that there's no holes to mount the starter solenoid in the front of the toolbox, I would say this tractor is a 1960 400 Suburban.

If it's what you want, then it's worth fixing.

As far as what I would pay...... not more than $50 to $75

I guess you have 12 months to get-er-done. I have seen worse come to life. In fact, I think I have an all original C-120 to match condition wise, just putting off getting started on it. Keep us posted. I know the "Duke" could make that thing look new.

did this tractor origonally have a kohler on it

If it is a 400 (which I'm pretty sure it is), there's a very strong chance it had a 4hp K-91 Kohler engine.

There was also supposed to be a few 400 models with "leftover" B-1290 (4hp) Clinton engines.

Is the hood around the steering wheel correct for a 400? I look at the pictures in the gallery and they all have a recessed area for throttle. Did they use the same kind of hood as a RJ on some 400's? I am just asking for my own knowledge not questioning anyone. Thanks Chris.

The serial number would have been stamped on the tag mounted between the control levers on the original hood.

Although a lot of these tractors look similar in design, there are certain unique parts that help with identification. Unfortunately the 400/550 models from 1960 are almost impossible to tell apart if they've been modified or are missing "key" pieces.

Even with the serial number, access to the production ledgers is the only positive way of identifying many of these tractors.

That model number is for a Craftsman.

I agree with TT. It is almost positively a 1960 model 400ST, with a '58 or '59 RJ hood.

thank you guys for all your info i guess ill start makin my parts list and sale list of the wrong parts i hope 12 months is long enouge to get it done
