Rattle in RM-324 deck

Recommended Posts

Finally got the 7 horse Kohler running right so I could try out the deck on my new to me 704. I'm getting a rattling noise that sounds like a train clickity clack. I can take the deck belts and move them back and forth (front to back) and almost duplicate it. Here's what I found:

I removed the gear covers and there was plenty of grease. (I greased them before even starting). The right hand spindle snap ring had come off so I reinstalled that. I can wiggle the double pulley back and forth (left to right) and there is some "chucking noise" the same as moving the belts front and back. I know there should be some free play in the gear train but how much. When the deck is running I can see that double pulley moving back and forth and the rattle goes along with that movement. Is there a way to tighten that gear lash up? or do I just have worn gears. The deck is whisper quiet otherwise.

I checked the side to side endplay of the double pulley with a dial indicator and I have .046" I wonder if I can put some shims behind the side gears to tighten that up?

Added a shim behind the side gear on the double pulley side. Took about .012" of gear lash out. Deck has stopped rattling and banging. Gear noise is a little more than I remember from 33+ years ago. I replaced the belts too and have some different size arbor shims coming. Maybe over the winter. It will give me time to stock up on rags and paper towels. I just love working on these decks. :D GREASE!!!! :D
