ACR question

alright, so as suspected, the hard starting on my 704 appears to be a faulty ACR. i pulled the head and the only time the exhaust valve opens is on the exhaust stroke. i checked the valve clearance and that is all good. so my question is, can i leave the "oil pan" bolted to the frame and lift the engine off to take a look at the cam and see whats up with the ACR? has anyone ever had any issues with the ACR? how did you fix it, what do i need to look for? thanks

You can separate the block from the oil pan, but (and I'm pretty sure I already posted this in one of your other threads) I'm almost certain that the cam in your K161 is the two-piece spark advance style and not the one-piece ACR version.

To answer your next question......... :thumbs:

Yes -- you can install the ACR camshaft in the early engines.

yup, you sir are correct. soooo with that said, is it just suppose to pull hard and thats that? well the engine is split in half.... fun process, but yeah kinda wish i would have listened to you the first time :thumbs:

They're definitely harder to pull than a 3hp Briggs push mower engine, but they shouldn't tear your arm off either.

Check the spark advance portion of the camshaft to verify that it's moving properly - or that it will even move at all.

I have a K-181 that requires pulling the rope with both hands - and a foot behind the rear tire - to get it fired up, but I also have others that can be pulled with one hand while sitting in the seat. :thumbs:

what is this spark advance you speak of? there is a cam for the points pushrod but i dont see any advancing mechanism. any idea?

The spark advance style camshafts are two piece. (not counting the pin through the middle) The short end of the camshaft (where the points lobe is) is separate from the rest of the cam and advances the timing via centrifugal weights.

The flyweights are on the side of the camshaft gear closest to the engine block.

well i put it all back together and found out it was a stupid idea being a cheap a$$ and using liquid gasket to make an oil pan gasket. so now i wasted two hours and a quart of oil and i get to tear it all apart again :thumbs: %&$#*!

so i think i know why my motor might be pulling so hard... when looking at my valve cover i noticed the previous owner used a lot of silicone and gasket material but failed to cut out cut the "windows" in the valve cover gaskets. so maybe the crankcase isn't able to breath? either way, i will add that to my gasket list...
