Ive got a B80 not sure of the year (cant read the ser#) its a 4 speed. Anyway the previous owner put in wrong spark plug and the other day it shot out of the head. Im looking for a new head and am wondering what kohler motor it came with. Im thinking it was the K181 but am not sure. Can you confirm or deny this???

You don't need the serial number to date the machine, just the model number. Since the 4 speed was only available in 1974 & 1975, it has to be one of those years, unless of course someone put a 4 speed in a later model. The model number would be either 1-0140 or 1-0145 for a 1974, and 1975 would be 1-0141. '76 & '77 started with the prefix 61 & 71 respectively.

The B-80 came with the K181S. If someone here does not respond with a head for you, I have seen them on eBay.

Actually, the B-80 came with a K-161 engine, or 7 horse. I would post in the classifieds here first for a used head, and then keep an eye on ebay for one. I'm thinkin somebody here will have one they would part with. :USA:

Edit: I should know better than to go from memory, I was thinking of my B-60. Sorry for the confusion. :D

Originally, the B-80 models all had K-181 Kohler 8hp engines.

You don't have to buy another head if you - or a local repair shop - can fix yours.

If you do decide to buy a used part, be careful you don't end up with the same problem.

Either way, make sure you install a new head gasket and torque the bolts in the proper pattern to 15 to 20 ft-lbs (and retorque them after the engine has reached operating temperature and cooled again)

Pull the head and bring it down to your local auto parts store and tell them you want a Heli-coil kit to repair the spark plug threads. It's an easy fix. Might as well clean the top of the motor up now that it's apart and slap on a new head gasket.

I have had problems with helicoils on the K161, I just watch ebay and pick up a head or two for a spare. I actually had a buddy weld up the plug hole on one and I retapped it. That one is still going
