dgjks6 8 #1 Posted June 15, 2010 If this is the wrong place the powers that be can move it and I will follow, but I could not figure out where to put it. It is not a wheel horse, but not another brand of tractor. It is a 5hp briggs and stratton off a chipper. So - This month I have been working about 110 hours per week. At work I lurk on tractor sites and when I get home I want to decompress. So I go out to my garage and start a project. I tried to restore a c85 (It's not going well - don't ask) So I have this chipper that leaks oil - so I think how nard can it be to replace a seal. Well, as it turns out, not that hard, except... The 5 hp horizontal briggs sits on a mount for the rear of a tractor and it is not stable. So instead of making a stable brace for it, I lean it up against a 5 gallon paint can. So I get the side plate off and it tips over and this gear falls off the PTO shaft. and I put it back on like this: No problem - except when I go to rotate the PTO shaft it will only rotate so far and then gets stuck. So I take the head off. If you want to make fun of me now - go ahead - I can take it. Everything looks fine. Then I remember something about timing. Turns out the cam was hitting the crankshaft. And Briggs does not have readily available manuals on line. So 1 - how and where do I figure out where that gear goes? 2 - head bolt torque and order? Let's start there. The Toolman 22 #2 Posted June 15, 2010 Gear goes on with dot side out. line them up (dots on gears) with each other first an slide gear rest of the way on. Cam wont hit the crank once you have the cast side plate of the engine back on Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

dgjks6 8 #6 Posted June 23, 2010 OK - moving this bck to the top because nothing is ever easy in my life. I should find another hobby. So I am having trouble scoring parts for my c-85 and am waiting to get ot the show for parts, so I tear into a 5hp briggs on a leaf vacuum. It runs perfect but leaks a little oil. So as above I got everything apart. Cleaned and got a new gasket and oil seal. Tried to put the side plate back on and the cam falls out along with 2 tappets. Put grease on the tappets and put back in and the put the cam back in. no bearings, just sits in a hole in the side. Screw the side plate on - try to get the correct torque and strip on of the screws. Keep going anyway. Put oil in. Pull a few times to spread the oil. Then pull and it starts first time. Now it runs rough and smells like burning rubber. Should I give up? Should I rebuild the carb? Was running perfect before. There are no adjusments on the carb. Is there a way to fix the stripped bolt hole? (the block is aluminum so I assume the hole is stripped) When putting things back in should I have used grease or somekind of lube anywhere?
