42" Deck

Recommended Posts

I went to sharpen the blades on a 42" RD deck on the 416-8 and, since I had some extra blades from when I bought the tractor several years ago, I thought I'd just put a set of the extras on since they were already sharp. They looked a little strange so I got to measuring the actual lengths of the blades. The ones I took off of the deck measured 14.25". The ones I thought I was going to put on, the extras, measured 13.625". I never really paid much attention to the blade lengths since I usually just pulled off the blades, sharpened them and put them back on. So, doing the math, 3 x 13.625 is 40.875, and, 3 x 14.25 is 42.75. What gives? Are the blades supposed to be mixed, e.g., use two of the 13.625's on the outside and one 14.25 in the middle? That would give you 41.5. There is no interference when using three 14.25's. I'm a little embarassed. I've been using Wheel Horses since the 70's and never measured the actual blade lengths. I also have a 310-8 with a 42" SD deck. Have I mixed-up these blades? Anybody want to shed some light on this issue? Thanks.

For future reference, you can look on several websites that sell blades, they will show the WH part number and the blade length which you can get from the Toro site or several of the other sites that have the parts drawings for WH equipment.
