Rear discharge vs side...

Yes, I posted this in the Implement forum, was directed to do a search using "vs side" or "vs rear", I did and found only my own post.

So here it is again:

It came with a SD deck that I don't like, I'm looking fo a rear discharge deck, but it occurs to me that EVERY deck should be a rear discharge deck for the obvious reasons, unless you're going to bag.

Why hasn't the rear discharge deck become industry standard?

Rear discharge decks tend to leave clumps, particularly in heavy or thick turf. Many people don't want to have to "rake-up" after getting off the machine. Also, the cuttings aren't dicharged so quickly as with the side-chute units. In any rotary mower, the cuttings are impelled naturally to the right side of the deck by the inertia generated by the clock-wise rotation of the blades, so by positioning the chute at that point, the the cuttings are immediately discharged. With the rear-discharge deck, however, the cuttings have to be re-circulated toward the rear by the blades which requires more energy, so the engine, the blades and the belts are subjected to greater load and, consequently, there is a greater consumption of fuel and oil.

Rear discharge decks are not overly popular here for finish mowing but if you look into mowers overseas the rear discharge with a bagger appears to be a popular option. I assume the rear deck and bagger system is popular overseas because of space saving size and allowing the usual mowing on either side. I assume they must also have improved the rear decks cut performance with some type of bagging system or higher flow deck design.

Side discharge...been using one since I started mowing as a kid, never seen a problem. I can control where my grass goes and in the fall, where my leaves go. I stripe my lawns so I have less clippings anyways...GATOR BLADES!

Ok, at the risk of sounding like a completely uneducated hillbilly for the, I don't know, the 708th time, what is a striped lawn? Is that like the ball fields do now a days? And, if so, how do you do it and why does it created less clippings?

A striped lawn is like you see on some of the ball fields. It is simply driving in an opposite direction on each pass down the yard so the grass is laying down in the opposite direction creating the dark and light color stripes. Any deck will do it to a point but decks with a roller at the back are more likely to do leave a better stripe. Some mowers have an optional striping kit with a roller added just for the strip effect.

An alternative to bagging that was popular at one time was to pull a sweeper behind when you mow. This requires a rear discharge deck.

I have both and use both. The RD is great for cutting on either side. Micah said it best to me that it's like cutting hay. When grass grows fast I like the side discharge, so it's on the 416 now. Once I get this 520 restored, the SD will go on that tractor.

I also have both and each is good for different things example rear is good for picking up leaves with a sweeper , a side disc is also good for blowing them into a pile for easy pick up .before I got both I used the side disc (it sure is nice to be able to have both ) It is nice to have both but in my opinion the side discharged is my bet :D

I'm surprised no one said SHARP blades, that is key to any deck, and more so with the poor design of the WH decks, and the tips of the blades need to be sharp so it will not leave strips of uncut grass when turning, that is mainly on the RD deck.

take a rear discharge, cut a section out of the side and then you'll have both at the same time :thumbs:
