Onan 16hp governor

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I hope someone has experienced this before and can give me an idea about what I'm up against.

Problem: When the engine gets warm say after about 10 to 15 minutes of mowing I find myself gradually going faster and faster unless I dial back on the throttle. The tractor feels like it is going into runaway mode. I have checked an lubed all the pivot points in the governor linkage but with no improvement. If I let the engine cool off I then can repeat the whole scenario. My engine temp is good and the weather is cool and my cooling air is plentiful and not too hot, fins are clean. I bought this from a guy and this is really my first usage of it and of course he made no mention of the problem but I did notice he had put a new governor link on it. If only I'd thought about that at the sale.

Thanks in advance from N.W. PA

Dave

Problem Solved

Turned out to be fuel starvation causing it. Cleaned tank, replaced tank screen and fuel filter and the problem went away. The hint came from a 2 hr. drive to the nearest dealer's service department and a chat with a tech. I'll have to get those guys some donuts.

Save Old Iron

Dave,

I can't believe someone told you starving an engine of fuel was actually going to make it run faster !

Send me the donuts.

Are you sure the throttle cable is not slowly creeping up to a higher setting - maybe the throttle arm needs to be "staked" a little at its pivot point ?

Is there anyway of telling what the RPM's are at runaway condition ?

Could it be the RPM's are not changing but the ground speed is ? What tractor is the 16HO Onan in ?
