dscott2000 1 #1 Posted June 8, 2010 Well, I am simply puzzled.... I am to the point of pulling my hair out by the root! Here is my issues; Even at idle, I am seeing oil coming out of the govenor shaft. I have been told that the valve breather is either clogged, or on the engine wrong. Well, I have pulled the valve cover off and I have found out that the breather looks great. Since I have no idea how the reed set goes back in.. So, I put it back exactly how I found it. (I found it with the reed on the intake side of the valves with the reed opening towards the inside of the valves.) Plus, it smokes like a freight train at idle. The smoking gradually gets better as the RPMs go up and then back down. My question is; Is the breather in correctly? And, if it isn't, How in the world does it go in? And, when I have the valve cover off, Should I clean out the filter element when I have it apart? The engine has been recently rebuilt ( before I got it.) and I dont really think that I should have this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated! wheel horse man 56 #2 Posted June 8, 2010 i can take a picture on my kohler book of the breather assmbaly but my first qustion are you shore it was rebuilt. because it sounds like you are haveing blow by
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #3 Posted June 8, 2010 This is how the inner plate is to be installed: (note that the small drain-back hole is on the bottom right and the reed is on the outside) The filter media is actually there to catch the vapor (oil mist and air) and condense it into "liquid" oil again. Once it builds up enough to form a heavy drop, the oil will flow to the bottom and return to the valve spring cavity through the small hole. :D

But, when I pulled the head off to replace the piston rings and valve seats. I saw honing marks on the cylinder wall and a brand new piston along with brand new valves. Saying that, Im not totally ruling out blow by.

Mine has the reed opening towards the valves and the drain hole is possibly on top. (I really wasnt paying that close attention.) I will post a picture of it when I go to pull it apart later. I think I will find that it is on backwards and upside down.

dscott2000 1 #7 Posted June 11, 2010 Well, I got the picture taken after I thought about it. Well, here it is!! Just as I suspected, it was on wrong! Now that I have it on there properly, it is not smoking AS much. I think the smoking may be residual. Hopefully, I dont have to pull this thing apart again! Anyway, I am now working on setting the governor properly. I hooked up a timing light to it and found out that it is running about 750 over redline. Which I hear is 4000. Can anyone help me on setting this?

Can anyone help me on setting this? Here's the manual that shows how to set the governor. I should read it and refresh my memory, I have to set one of mine...... http://www.kohlerengines.com/onlinecatalog/pdf/tp_2379.pdf
gwgdog66 23 #9 Posted November 13, 2011 dscott2000 Just wondering if this fixed the leak around the governor shaft? My brother's K241 is leaking around the shaft too, but not smoking. I'm going there today to clean out the carb, (Won't start with out a shot of carb cleaner) and figured I would check this while I have it off.
