boovuc 1,090 #1 Posted June 7, 2010 Hi Guys, I've been beating a roll pin on a broken part of an 856 tractor for days. It won't move. PB Blaster, each day for over a week and this pin won't budge. The piece I'm trying to remove is the Arm/clutch rod pivot. (Part #4899 on a 1967 856). It is broken thus leaving no way to connect linkage to the idler arm shaft and the brake. I have a spare part but can't get the old piece off. 1. Any tips/tricks? 2. Anyone have a complete idlerarm and shaft they want to give up that I can slip through this frame and attach my arm/clutch rod pivot with a new 1/8 inch roll pin? I don't have any skin left on my knuckles. Thanks, BooVuc Mill Hall, PA
rickv1957 74 #2 Posted June 7, 2010 Can you apply a little heat then use your pin punch,Rick
wagnfixr 0 #3 Posted June 7, 2010 I use a homemade punch in a zip gun (air chisel) and some Aerokroil.
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #4 Posted June 8, 2010 Do you have an angle grinder, Boo? The arm's already shot, so just grind away at it until you get close to the cross shaft, then take a chisel and break it off. Once it's out of the way, grind the protruding roll pin ends off, remove the shaft and place on something solid, and drive out the remaining piece of roll pin. :D
boovuc 1,090 #5 Posted June 8, 2010 Thanks for the advice guys. I can try some heat and beat. That was my next move! I don't have the air chisel but I'll bet the guys in our maintenance department could come up with a mod. Terry......the guys at work also suggetsed doing a grind cut on it and using a chisel to "break" the old piece off. I have a compressor in my garage and I can "borrow" our little angle grinder to do the deed. I guess after 40 plus years one can expect this! I'll let you know how I make out. It took about 45 minutes to seperate the good part from the cut off shaft in a vice. Too bad I can't get my tractor into the plant's maintenace shop. In the old days I could! boovuc 1,090 #6 Posted June 12, 2010 I found someone who "owed me" a favor so we tag teamed this roll pin. Took the wheels and tub off and we pulled the idler pully all the way down and beat it silly from the bottom up. Just before the angle grinder was going to make a cameo, it moved! Five minutes later it finally came out. Now all I need is the smaller brake band to the arm linkage! Oh, and a drive belt! Progress at the speed of evolution!
