squonk 43,769 #1 Posted June 5, 2010 Sorry for the long post. Way back in 64 we moved to a bigger house and along with it came a bigger yard. I was 5 at the time. My dad traded in his David Bradley walk behind for a brand new Wheel Horse. It came with a front mounted reel mower. In maybe a weeks time the tractor went back but the reel mower stayed. What showed up was a model 604 with 32" rear discharge deck and snowplow. I don't think it was the same tractor we started with but I'm not sure. That reel mower sat in (how appropriate) a horse corral and end up rusting solid. As I grew up I always looked at that thing and wondered how it even could have mounted on that 604. For some reason I never asked my dad the story behind it. I ended up making a rear scraper out of it. Does any one here know what possibly could have been the first tractor? :D
MaineDad 87 #2 Posted June 5, 2010 Possibly a RJ 58? Was the engine mounted near the seat?
squonk 43,769 #3 Posted June 5, 2010 It's funny you would be the first to reply MaineDad. My dad was from Madawaska. I really don't recall anything about the first tractor.
Buzz 502 #4 Posted June 5, 2010 If it was a brand new one in 1964 (to the best of your knowledge as a five year old ), then it could have been a 604, 654, 704, or 854. They all could use the LMR-304 front mounted sickle bar mower. There is a manual for that mower that should show how it's mounted. It's in the 5th manuals group. You have to join to view and download it. Here's the link: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wheelhorsetr...manuals5/files/
squonk 43,769 #5 Posted June 5, 2010 This was a reel mower, not a sickle bar. Could a 604 still use it? As I grew up I became mechanically inclined and still couldn't see how it could have mounted unless some parts were missing.
Buzz 502 #6 Posted June 5, 2010 This was a reel mower, not a sickle bar. Ooops....... I typed sickle bar instead of reel mower. RMR-304 is a reel mower. Check out the manual in the link I sent. More than likely parts were "misplaced" at some time or another. FYI, if you go to the Toro site and enter RMR-304 it calls it a reel mower but gives the parts breakdown for a rotary mower . :USA:
squonk 43,769 #7 Posted June 5, 2010 Thanks Buzz. I believe I was looking at unit and feeling the bracket that was on the rear went under the tractor on the frame. But now seeing a picture it makes sense that it was mounted on the front axle. looked a real PITA to use. No wonder he got the belly mower. :D
