ragtoppers 0 #1 Posted May 24, 2010 I recently picked up a 418-8 with a Kohler 18 hp engine. Something in the starting system is clunking when I turn the key. It only does it for a second or two and then fires right up and runs fine. What could this be? Easy fix???? :D
Duff 206 #2 Posted May 24, 2010 Sounds like the bendix is hanging up before it engages the flywheel. I've got a [forgive me] green tractor that I sometimes have to hit the switch a couple of times before the starter will engage and turn the engine over. It "clunks" once or twice, then spins nicely. I'm not familiar with the Kohler 18 to know what's involved, but if you can get to the starter drive it might be worth cleaning it and lubing it.
