Need some advise on a 416-8 Engine

Recommended Posts

Raider12

A good friend of mine has this 416-8 that he purchased new. It now has it's share of hours working hard at everything over the years. The engine now has developed a knock. Should we rebuild this kohler or tranplant a Honda engine? I have rebuilt the single cylinder engins before. And Im not afraid of this one. But what shoud we expect for cost to rebuild? Bore the cylinders, new pistons and rods etc? Whats your opinion?

Cost of rebuilding the Kohler will almost certainly exceed $350, the current price

of a Chinese-assembled 13 hp Honda (the Greyhound from Harbour Freight).

Not much of a deal to install, I have bolted in two in C-111 and C-81 chassis',

basically the same as the 416-8. Both running well. You gotta do what you gotta do.

$350 doesn't scare me in the way of cost. I do know that a complete overhaul kit for the 20hp onan is close to $1000 not including machine work. I just never have priced a kit for the twin Kolhler.

Rebuild the Kohler... or look for s 16hp single magnum or K341 and transplant it. I wouldn't put in a 13 hp Chonda (chinese honda :D ) and expect the same performance---the torque between the two isn't even close.

Hey Tony,

Re torque of the Sino-Nippon 13 hp engine, of course it won't equal that of the 16 hp

K or O, but its enough to turn a 48" deck. All depends on the demands to be made of

it in use. Its a pretty darn good engine and the price is right. Like Leno says, "I thought

I would just mention it." After all, Raider did ask about the Honda power option. :USA:

I'm not bashing the Honda Clone at all... just the idea of going from a 16 twin to a 13 single with alot less grunt may turn out dissapointing.

What might be REALLY interesting here would be to compare published TORQUE curves from the two engines. I have not seen a Kolher 12HP torque curve, but I believe I saw one from the Chonda's.

Anyone seen a 12 HP Kolher curve to compare ?

Torque, displacement, bore and stroke of 13 hp engines:

Greyhound- 17 ft-lbs., 389 cc, 88x64 mm.

Honda- 20 ft-lbs., 389 cc, 88x64 mm.

Kohler- 21.2 ft-lbs., 398 cc, 87x67 mm.

Certainly looks like the Greyhound (Harbour Freight)

has been detuned (or untuned). Should last longer!

Are you sure that Kohler is a twin. I have a 416-8 and it's a single. What I would do, and have done, is bide your time til you can find a Kohler or a tractor with a good Kohler to transplant unless you are in a hurry.
