Bigger engine for the ranger

Recommended Posts

littleredrider

Want to put a bigger engine in my ranger. I found on craigslist locally a guy selling and older horse with a 10 horse Kohler, but thinking it's gonna be too big to fit in there. I did a search, almost 30 pages of lawn rangers, but didn't see anything on putting a bigger motor in one other than the Kohler 8 horse.

So without hacking the hood, what is the biggest motor than can fit in one??

If you get an AQ engine it will have the smaller oil pan and you could probably fit it into your tractor with just raising the hood about an inch.

The AQ engines don't sit as high as the standard engines.

What's an AQ engine??

Immediately following the spec number on a Kohler engine is a letter or group of letters that vaguely help identify whether they have electric ("S") or retractable ("T") start, gear reduction ("R"), a special oil pan ("A"), etc.

Charlie is referring to the models with a special oil pan (identified by the letter "A") but there are many variations - including increased capacity for generator use - so the "A" might not mean a shallow pan.

The "Q" represents the Quietline models which normally have extra shrouding, larger mufflers, and balancer gears for quieter and smoother operation. The "Q" means absolutely nothing in a search for a larger engine for your Lawn Ranger, and regardless of the oilpan, no big block Kohler K or M single will fit without some modifications.

If you get a chance to check out the pictures of the 1045 models, you will see that even Wheel Horse's attempt at installing a big block Kohler in a round hood failed. Once they realized it wouldn't work, they designed the dash/tank tray/hood to allow the K241 to fit. That's why the 1045 hood is a little different than any other hood of that style. :D

Hello,

I put a pull start 8 hp Kohler in my LR. I also install a 8 speed rear. That tractor has plenty of power, more then it can really use.

I've seen a Kohler 10 horse and it's big, don't think it would fit without some hood cuttin', and don't want to do that.

Been looking at the Harbor Freight knock offs, but hard to get an idea of how big it is without something to compare it to.

I'd love to get my hands on an 8 horse, got the 8 speed coming....

I've got a NIB Tecumseh LH-318 8 horse mounted in it. Had to make a cut out for the air cleaner, (Extra scrap hood, saving the original) with a flat mounting plate for the engine, everthing else lined up fine. 10 Horse LH-358 would bolt right in as well.

I found a couple Kohler 8s on craigslist, one was off tiller and is either rebuilt or a new motor, need to find the ad again....

Do you have any pics of your ranger?? Like to see what you did to clear the engine....

Would this engine work?? I don't see why it wouldn't but I'm no expert on these. I'm used to swapping big blocks in trucks and cars, not tractors!!!!

best advise I can give is to take measurements and then compare to what the max room you have to work with
