rydogg 186 #1 Posted May 18, 2010 I got the 653 put together and running but the problem is that it will run forever if not being driven but once you start to drive it it runs for about 3 minutes and then wants to kill like its running out of gas but it will stay running if you drop the throttle down to an idle and if you try to speed up the motor it will die, if it does die it starts right up at low speed with no problem. I have cleaned the whole fuel system twice, I bypassed the fuel pump and that didn't help, I have adjusted the fuel air mix and that doesn't help. Does this carb have the metering rod in it and could that be the problem? Could it be a governor problem? I am about ready to order a new carb but I want to make sure it is the carb. I don't think it is an electrical problem since it will still low idle. Maybe I should just put a kohler in it and be done with the tecumseh problems :D
smokin joe 31 #2 Posted May 18, 2010 your best bet is the kohler.thats just my opinion though!! :D
W9JAB 156 #3 Posted May 18, 2010 :D sounds like you still got a pluged jet, prob. in a mixing screw.
VinsRJ 723 #4 Posted May 18, 2010 Also check spark... make sure its good and strong.
rydogg 186 #5 Posted May 18, 2010 Well the temptation to put a kohler in it was there but i resisted I wanted to keep the original tecumseh in it so I cleaned the carb 2 more times and figured out that the problem was sediment in the fuel pump getting up to the carb. I got it running and put my son on it for about an hour and had no problems so I think its fixed. Now I just need a choke cable, seat cover, shifter boot and someone to tig up the tank where the hood thumb screws go and I think were good for now I might even sharpen up the blades and mow with it He loves his tractors to him they are all his. wheel horse man 56 #7 Posted May 19, 2010 Put a kohler in it. Tecumseh are not the best engines but some are ok
Coadster32 793 #8 Posted May 19, 2010 Techys run good if you put in a paper in-line fuel filter, gas shutoff, and run it out of gas when you're not going to use it for a few weeks. Cheap solution, and it works wonders. :D
Ken B 3,166 #9 Posted May 19, 2010 Nice to see you got it running right. You may as well leave the Techy on there now that it runs good. Its only original once.
linen beige 14 #10 Posted May 19, 2010 Another solution to the Walbro carb problem on Techys is to replace them with Carter "N"s. Takes some fabrication of throttle and choke levers/cables, but worth it.
