v65animal 0 #1 Posted May 15, 2010 When rebuilding the deck, one of the 3 spindle caps doesn't stay on. Is the little rubber seal the only thing that holds it in place? Can the rubber seal be replaced? bk-scouter 93 #2 Posted May 15, 2010 Sam- I just replaced two housings on my 48" deck a few weeks ago, and my set up looks similar to your 42". My spindle shafts were held in place only by the attachment of the pulley, not a seal of any kind. Once the pulley is unbolted and removed, the shaft assembly slide down and out of the spindle housing / bearings on it's own. I was surprised how easy they came out. I'm not sure why you have such a huge space between the spindle housing and the "cup". The cup should should be covering the bearing and the end of the housing to keep from debris entering the spindle housing. Do you have the spindle assembly bolted in all the way when you attach the belt pulley? A parts diagram would help you if you don't have one, it certainly helped me If that checks out, then maybe you need to see if you have the right spindle shaft, housing, etc. -BK
bo dawg 517 #3 Posted May 15, 2010 I figured by now the experts would chime in. I haven't worked on a lot myself luckly, but what I figured, the grease seal is just a seal, it might help hold it in while bolting the spindle to the deck and slipping the pully on. But the pully being bolted on is what holds the spindle shaft up which will keep the cap pulled up as well. If its falling down while in operation then you have other problems. Which could be your pully nut loosening up, I would think, or a bearing. Hopefully someone will chime in thats more experienced with confirmation. Good luck! bo dawg 517 #4 Posted May 15, 2010 Also just to say that the last one I done I didn't even put the little rubber seal on and its doing just fine. You might check and make sure the bearings are seated all the way against the shoulder so that the shaft will go all the way allowing the cap to further set closer to the housing. v65animal 0 #5 Posted May 15, 2010 When I took these pictures the Pulley was not on the spindle yet. However, the other two Spindles didn't Drop like this when I had the pulley off. Sounds like it's Ok as is. The little rubber gasket in the 2nd picture was pretty much shot. Now I have a big washer on top of it to give clearance for the deck plate. Thanks! Sam The rubber gasket you're talking about is the bearing seal correct? You could either replace the bearing for a couple bucks or if it's a 5/8" shaft I can send you a seal that MAY work. I have replacement bearings which have the seals on both sides and one from each bearing had to be removed since there is no seal on the inside. BUT it may not fit. Even though the bearings have been replaced with the correct size bearings, the seal sizes are different because of the component sizes from the two bearings being different. Butch S.
